Wayne State University is searching for an experienced Research Nurse
- Department of Neurology at its Detroit campus location.
This position supports research studies focused on neurological studies and advanced neuroimaging techniques. The Research Nurse will play a critical role in participant-facing clinical procedures, including IV catheter placement, administration of contrast agents (including ferumoxytol/USPIO) and potentially infusing medications for clinical trials, while ensuring participant safety and adherence to research protocols. The position works closely with the Principal Investigator, MRI technologists, and research staff to ensure high-quality data acquisition and excellent participant experience.
EssentialFunctions
Perform IV catheter placement for research participants undergoing MRI scans.
Prepare and administer saline and ferumoxytol (USPIO) contrast agents in accordance with study protocols and safety guidelines.
Monitor participants during and after contrast administration for safety, adverse reactions, and overall comfort.
Ensure adherence to all clinical safety procedures, including infection control and emergency response readiness.
Recruit participants for studies by reviewing patient charts and interviewing candidates.
Document all specimen collection, IV access, drug administration, and monitoring activities in the appropriate source records and electronic data capture (EDC) systems in a timely and accurate manner.
Communicate participant status, protocol deviations, and adverse events to the PI and sub-investigators in a timely manner to support clinical decision-making.
Perform venipuncture and collect blood specimens per protocol-specified schedules.
Collect urine specimens according to study requirements.
Establish and maintain peripheral intravenous (IV) access for the purpose of investigational product administration, following institutional policies and aseptic technique standards.
Prepare and initiate study drug infusions in strict accordance with the protocol-specified dose, route, rate, and administration instructions, including any required pre‑medications.
Supervise the participant throughout the infusion period, conducting and documenting vital sign assessments at protocol-specified intervals.
Monitor the participant for signs and symptoms of infusion reactions, adverse events, or clinically significant changes in condition; escalates concerns to the Principal Investigator (PI) or licensed designee promptly.
Collaborate with MRI technologists and research coordinators during study sessions.
Assist with execution of MRI session workflow, including timing of contrast injections.
Support smooth coordination between pre‑scan, contrast administration, and post‑scan procedures.
Participate in relevant training related to MRI and clinical safety, contrast administration, and research compliance.
Perform other duties as assigned in support of research activities.
Follow all IRB‑approved protocols and institutional research guidelines.
Maintain accurate documentation related to clinical procedures performed during study visits.
Ensure compliance with HIPAA and participant confidentiality requirements.
Qualifications- Associate degree from an accredited college or university in Nursing required.
- Bachelor’s degree from an accredited college or university in Nursing preferred.
- Minimum 2 years of job‑related experience.
- Current Registered Nurse (RN) licensure with the State of Michigan is required.
- Demonstrated experience with IV placement and venous access required.
- Prior experience in MRI clinical or research environments preferred.
- Experience administering contrast agents or infusion protocols preferred.
- Familiarity with clinical research workflows and imaging studies preferred.
- Experience working in academic medical centers preferred.
