Under general supervision, manufactures, installs, repairs and removes traffic signs and markers.
- Assembles signposts, hangers, and cuts sign blanks for street and traffic signs.
- Lays out designs and applies sheeting to traffic sign blanks and markers.
- Applies bill posters to small billboards.
- Installs fixed or portable traffic signs by bolting hangers to existing poles or installs new poles in sidewalks or ground.
- Digs holes with air hammers, hydraulic tools, and post-hole augers.
- Cements new poles in place and removes discontinued signs.
- Loads and unloads materials from and drives sign installation trucks, as required.
- Builds signs, hangers, or posts from new or reclaimed materials using metal or woodworking machines or hand tools.
- Performs minor maintenance on sign shop equipment.
- May perform additional duties as assigned.
- High school graduation or GED.
Equivalent combinations of education and experience may be substituted to meet the education and experience requirements of this position.
Qualifications (preferred)- One (1) year of experience manufacturing and erecting signs.
Special Requirements
Valid State of Michigan Operator License.
Physical DemandsThe employee generally engages in light to strenuous physical activity which may include operating machinery, motor vehicles, heavy equipment, and using tools for an extended period of time. The employee is expected to move about and ascend/descend (e.g. stairs, ladders, trees, etc.) to accomplish tasks. The employee must be able to lift, push, pull, and carry up to 50 pounds.
Work involves periods of intense physical effort including digging and operating basic manual and power tools including, but not limited to, air hammers, hydraulic tools, and augers.
Work EnvironmentWork is performed in indoor and outdoor environments with potential exposure to conditions which may include fumes, extreme heat and cold, wetness, loud noise, dust, inclement weather and hazardous chemicals. Some work requires travel to meetings and/or other work sites with exposure to seasonal weather conditions.
