This position will help justice-impacted people overcome housing barriers and obtain, maintain, and transition into safe, stable, and affordable housing.
The Housing Specialist will use their lived experience with incarceration and reentry to build trust, provide mentorship, and deliver trauma-informed, participant-centered support.
Key responsibilities include:- Assessing participants’ housing needs and barriers
- Conducting property inspections and housing-site checks
- Developing relationships with landlords and expanding housing opportunities
- Helping participants navigate public benefits and community resources
- Organizing pro-social activities within housing sites
- Partnering with service providers, county jails, community courts, and parole and probation offices
- Maintaining accurate participant, service, and inspection records
- Supporting housing-service needs throughout the 13-county Region 4 area
- Be formerly incarcerated or have a conviction
- Have successfully completed probation or parole and no longer be under MDOC supervision
- Have a high school diploma or GED
- Have a valid driver’s license, car insurance, and consistent access to a reliable vehicle
- Be available to travel throughout Kent and Muskegon Counties and the broader Region 4 service area
- Be able to perform in-person property inspections
Knowledge of housing systems, landlord engagement, and local housing resources is strongly preferred. Experience supporting justice-impacted people, people experiencing homelessness, or other vulnerable populations is also strongly valued.
