The work combines vessel control with safety, maintenance, regulatory compliance, and crew oversight. The schedule includes weekends, holidays, and nights on short notice. Travel to tug docks throughout the Great Lakes system is part of the role. Stays away from home may be required when harbor and cross-lake assignments demand it.

The captain directs harbor assist towing within a consolidated port, where tug crews position and move vessels under close control.
