Sales Engineer
Make a difference. As a Quotations Specialist, you will handle the quotations process from the time you receive the request to the time you submit the quote to the customer. You will communicate with Graybar sales representatives, customer service representatives, customers and manufacturer representatives to gather needed details to create your quotes. You will learn about our product lines and pricing mechanics, as well as the computer systems we use, in order to provide quotations that result in profitable sales for the company.
Responsibilities- Prepare detailed and accurate cost estimates for low‑voltage (LV) and medium‑voltage (MV) electrical gear, assemblies, and related materials requested by Sales, Customer Service, and project teams.
- Read, interpret, and analyze single‑line electrical drawings, schematics, and layouts to accurately identify required LV and MV electrical equipment, ratings, configurations, and accessories.
- Review and interpret customer specifications, project requirements, and contract documents to ensure quotations are compliant with technical, commercial, and customer‑specific standards.
- Compile, review, and organize bills of material (BOMs), drawings, and specifications using in‑depth knowledge of manufactured products, engineered solutions, and available services.
- Identify scope gaps, conflicts, or ambiguities between single‑line drawings, specifications, and BOMs; proactively communicate clarification needs to Sales or customers.
- Evaluate and compare competing manufacturers’ BOMs, configurations, and technical offerings to determine the most appropriate and cost‑effective solution aligned with customer and specification requirements.
- Support pre‑submittals, submittals, resubmittals, and revisions, ensuring alignment with customer specifications and drawing intent prior to release.
- Identify and itemize accessories, control options, and third‑party equipment sourced externally as part of the quotation.
- Contact manufacturers, factories, and authorized representatives to obtain pricing, lead times, technical clarifications, and compliance confirmations related to specifications and drawings.
- Compute cost and sell pricing using multiple factors including margins, inventory availability, competitive environment, price validity, logistics, freight, handling, staging, and abnormal shipping requirements.
- Identify and communicate technical and commercial risks related to equipment selection, specification compliance, lead times, or scope assumptions.
- Ensure all quotations, customer approvals, and acknowledgments are properly documented to reduce liability and support audit and order execution requirements.
- Maintain accurate digital job files, including drawings, specifications, correspondence, and pricing assumptions, to support smooth handoff to Order Management and Operations.
- 4–5 years of experience quoting electrical gear, switch gear, or engineered electrical solutions within the electrical distribution or manufacturing industry.
- Ability to work independently with minimal supervision while managing multiple priorities.
- Four‑year degree in Business, Engineering, Construction Management, or a related field preferred.
- High school diploma or GED required.
- Demonstrated business acumen with strong interpersonal and customer service skills.
The expected starting rate of pay for this position is $35.00 USD hourly, based on experience.
