OverviewApex Engineering Group has an opening for a Lead Engineer working in our Water Group. The role involves managing a team of engineers, technicians, and support staff on water and/or wastewater projects from the planning phase through design and construction. The Lead Engineer is responsible for independently managing projects, contributing to design and development of project plans and specifications, and mentoring team members.
Lead Engineers typically report to a senior engineer, sector leader, or principal of the firm. Additional responsibilities include general marketing of the firm and business development activities.
- Provide professional engineering services for clients, including studies, planning, design, specifications, plans, reports, construction administration, observation, and project management.
- Communicate frequently and effectively with clients, supervisors, and project team members on a consistent basis, providing updates and progress during all phases of projects.
- Attend company meetings, project meetings, and client meetings as deemed necessary.
- Lead the preparation of proposals and participate in interviews for securing work for the firm. Responsibilities for business development increase with experience and mentoring by senior staff.
- Initiate independent thinking and make rational judgment calls.
- Provide direction and work with engineering technicians and other team members on the development of project plans and specifications.
- Work and coordinate with other engineering teams on complex multi‑discipline projects.
- Understand and follow company employee handbook and mandated safety policies.
- Perform responsibilities in a conscientious, legal, and ethical manner with a strong attention to detail.
- Work independently and as part of a team.
- Participate in professional organizations and community leadership programs as deemed appropriate.
- Travel and out‑of‑town stays may be required; overtime may be required especially during the construction season.
- Other duties as assigned by the supervisor.
- Bachelor of Science in Civil or Environmental Engineering required;
Master’s Degree is a plus. - Professional Engineer license preferred or ability to be licensed within 6‑12 months required.
- 7 or more years of experience working as a Civil Engineer or Environmental Engineer in the water and/or wastewater field.
- Experience with water supply, distribution and treatment, wastewater collection, conveyance, and treatment is necessary.
- Experience preparing civil design drawings, specifications, and opinions of cost related to water/sewer utilities, pump stations, treatment facilities, etc. is preferred.
- Experience working with local and state agencies is a plus.
- Strong project management skills and experience are essential.
- Construction management experience is required.
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills are a prerequisite.
- Detail oriented, self‑motivated with strong interpersonal and organizational skills.
- Flexible working style and willingness to occasionally modify personal schedules to meet deadlines and client needs.
- Proficient using Microsoft Windows/Office products (Word, Excel, Outlook, PowerPoint).
- Hydraulic modeling and/or process modeling is a plus.
- Working knowledge of AutoCAD, Civil 3D or other CADD-based civil design software is a plus.
- A valid driver’s license is required or the ability to obtain one.
- Operate a computer under normal ergonomic office conditions.
- Work outdoors during the construction season.
- Potential for prolonged standing and walking during construction observation or surveying.
- Lift objects or containers weighing up to 50 lbs.
- Work scheduled and required hours.

Base Salary Pay Range: $95,000 – $130,000 (Actual base pay is dependent on several factors, including experience, education, licensure, job location, and internal equity.)
