Chemical Engineer, Process Engineer

ResponsibilitiesAs a Chemical Engineer at a Marathon refinery, you will become familiar with process equipment fundamentals and best practices, build critical thinking skills, and gain an understanding of how engineering disciplines work together. You will work with professionals who run a specific portion of the refining process and may have opportunities to work on multiple areas, gaining a broad understanding of plant operations.
You will also develop written and verbal presentation skills.
Typical co‑op and intern positions include:
- Process / Technical Service Engineers – work on projects in the Technical Services Department; develop and lead test runs to optimize refinery operations; perform process engineering calculations; monitor and make recommendations about catalyst and adsorbents; provide recommendations for process improvements.
- Operations Research Engineers – develop planning, blending, scheduling, and process models to optimize crude oil purchasing, refinery production, blending, and finished product scheduling; validate production data and mass balancing, process modeling, and develop graphical interfaces.
- Environmental Engineers – work on compliance projects, apply engineering principles to environmental projects, perform process calculations for the Risk Management Plan, work on wastewater treatment plant projects, and participate in inspections or testing by officials.
- Products Control / Economics Engineers – work on operations, blending, and refinery economics; analyze process flow data; update gasoline blend information; develop applications to present process data.
- Candidates must be majoring in Chemical Engineering.
- Strong academic performance.
- Authorized to work in the US on a full‑time indefinite basis without need for visa sponsorship now or in the future.
- Positions available in spring, summer, and fall semesters.
- Availability for multiple work terms is preferred.
- A valid driver’s license is required.
- Concurrent enrollment in a degree‑seeking program.
- Military experience is a plus.
- Pay: MIN $32.92 per hour / MAX $41.60 per hour.
