American Engineering Testing Inc, an employee-owned consulting firm, seeks a Field Engineer to support geotechnical, environmental, and construction materials projects across the Midwest. In this role, you will perform field and lab testing of soils, concrete, asphalt, and aggregates; collect samples; observe construction activities; and document results to ensure quality, safety, and compliance. You'll interpret plans and specs, communicate findings to project engineers, and prepare clear field reports.
This hands-on position offers strong mentorship, professional development, and growth into technical and leadership roles while contributing to safe, sustainable infrastructure and building projects.
Responsibilities
- Perform field and laboratory testing of soils, concrete, asphalt, and aggregates for infrastructure and building projects.
- Collect, label, and transport samples following ASTM/AASHTO standards and company procedures.
- Observe and document construction activities to verify compliance with plans, specifications, and testing requirements.
- Operate and maintain field testing equipment, including nuclear density gauges and related instruments.
- Interpret project plans, specifications, and test requirements to plan daily field activities.
- Prepare accurate daily reports, test records, and documentation for engineers and clients.
- Communicate test results, field conditions, and issues to project engineers, contractors, and clients in a timely manner.
- Follow all safety procedures and participate in safety meetings, inspections, and training.
- Collaborate with engineers and technicians to solve field problems and improve testing approaches.
- Support continuous improvement, mentoring, and professional development within a collaborative, employee-owned culture.
Required Skills
- Construction materials testing (soil, concrete, asphalt, aggregates)
- Field sampling and in-situ testing methods
- Reading and interpreting plans and specifications
- Use of nuclear density gauge and other field equipment
- Basic geotechnical and pavement concepts
- Technical report writing and documentation
- Use of Excel and field data collection software
- Surveying and layout basics
- Understanding of ASTM/AASHTO test methods
- Knowledge of safety regulations and PPE use
