Supervisory Park Ranger; Interpretation

Summary

This position is located within the Department of the Interior, National Park Service, Midwest Region, Division of Interpretation in Medora, North Dakota. The Program Manager for Interpretation, Education, and Visitor Services oversees planning, direction, and execution of all interpretation, education, visitor services, volunteer, fee collection, public affairs, and partnership programs for Theodore Roosevelt National Park.

• Define objectives, develop methodologies, and establish priorities.
• Prepare schedules and assign work.
• Review, accept, amend, or reject assigned work.
• Evaluate staff performance and recommend awards, step increases, promotions, and reassignments.
• Hear and resolve complaints.
• Identify development and training needs of staff.
• Conduct planning, coordination, and execution of business functions, resource allocation, and production.
• Design and implement interpretive programs focused on cultural and natural resources and park history.
• Manage recreation fee program.
• Conduct outreach with the public, local officials, media, and external partners.
• Establish and maintain collaborative relationships with external stakeholders to achieve shared cultural resource preservation, education, or visitor service goals.

There is no substitution of education for experience at the grade level(s) of this announcement.

Applicants are required to participate in the Direct Deposit Electronics Funds Transfer Program and to maintain a valid driver’s license and a Motor Vehicle Operator’s License and Driving Record.

Applicants must wear a National Park Service uniform and comply with uniform standards; a uniform allowance will be provided. The position may require on‑call duty, evenings, weekends, holidays, overtime, shift work, and up to three nights per month of overnight travel. Applicants must acquire a government charge card for travel and may need to complete related training.

Applicants will be evaluated on how well they meet the qualifications listed in the vacancy announcement. Evaluation will be based on application materials, questionnaire responses, and assessment results. Competencies evaluated include administration and management, human resources management, partnering, and technical competence.

Most work is sedentary, but the incumbent is expected to travel and work outdoors in a variety of conditions. The job may involve hiking and exposure to extreme environmental conditions. Work hours may be flexible with frequent travel by automobile, bus, rail, or air. The position is suitable for telework only during an emergency or natural disaster.
