Marathon Petroleum Company is seeking a Refinery Mechanic to support the Dickinson Renewable Diesel Facility located in North Dakota. This position is responsible for ensuring the safe and reliable operation of mechanical equipment in the refinery.
Key Responsibilities- Install, monitor, maintain, troubleshoot, and repair various types of rotating mechanical refinery equipment, including compressors, pumps, blowers, condensers, fans, cooling towers, and exchangers.
- Perform routine maintenance and repairs on rotating equipment and conduct minor leak repairs/isolations on fixed equipment and piping.
- Reassemble and reinstall pumps and pump seals with associated tubing.
- Change oil, check alignment, exchange fan belts, inspect coupling guards, balance pump shafts, and inspect seal pots, replacing parts as needed.
- Perform vibration testing and record vibration readings.
- Perform maintenance and overhauls of compressors under supervision of an engineer.
- Remove pumps and perform minor machining on parts using a lathe and mill.
- Perform preventative maintenance and lubrication on rotating equipment components such as couplings, belts, motors, and blower cooling systems.
- Maintain cooling tower mechanical systems, including shive condition/replacement, fan/motor lubrication, blade pitch/coupling checks, and gearbox fill lines/levels.
- Monitor compressor component tolerances and fit (pistons, piston valves, rods, packing).
- Install blinds for lockout‑tagout and safe‑off for equipment inspections and maintenance.
- Replace 3″ screwed metallic piping and glued PVC piping, mainly in water circuits.
- Repair heat exchangers related to compressor coolers.
- Torque heads on leaking process heat exchangers using electric and hydraulic torque wrenches.
- Provide project coordination when small‑crew projects are in progress.
- Help train company personnel in operation and maintenance of various mechanical equipment.
- Manage waste activities: remove, handle, label, and store hazardous materials; conduct sampling; complete required training; respond to upsets; communicate corrective actions to departmental and environmental staff.
- High school diploma or GED required.
- Associate’s degree in a related field or equivalent mechanical experience preferred.
- Minimum of two years of refinery mechanical (or similar process plant) experience preferred.
- Valid driver’s license required.
- Experience with rotating mechanical refinery equipment desired.
- Experience using computerized maintenance software systems and understanding of OEM manuals.
- Strong mechanical aptitude.
- Able to operate cranes, aerial lifts, forklifts, and other equipment to support assigned tasks.
- Willing and able to work overtime for plant emergencies or outages.
- Strong written and verbal communication skills; capable of communicating across all levels of the organization.
- Willing to climb ladders, work at heights, and in confined spaces.
- Physically capable of bending, stooping, kneeling, climbing, lifting, and carrying up to 50 lbs.
- Proficient in Microsoft Office applications (Outlook, Word, Excel).
- Able to work efficiently and safely alone and as part of a team.
- Starting pay range: $45.86 - $52.05 per hour; maximum rate up to $56.18 with demonstrated proficiency.

Technicians typically work a 10‑hour shift, four days a week, and must be available for overtime. Refinery Mechanics work in a safety‑sensitive environment and must complete a pre‑employment assessment, drug/alcohol and medical screenings, and a background check. New hires will also complete maintenance qualification training and participate in random drug and alcohol screenings.
