The purpose of this class is to supervise and participating in the maintenance of roads, bridges, beaches and drainage systems.
** Duties and Responsibilities
**** The functions listed below are those that represent the majority of the time spent working in this class.  Management may assign additional functions related to the type of work of the class as necessary.
*** Supervises, directs, and evaluates assigned staff, processing employee concerns and problems, directing work, counseling, disciplining, and completing employee performance appraisals.
* Coordinates, assigns and reviews work and establishes work schedules; maintains standards; monitors status of work in progress; inspects completed work assignments; answers questions; gives advice and direction as needed.
* Supervises, operates and maintains assigned equipment, including motor graders, rollers, loaders, tractors, dump trucks, backhoes, and water distributor trucks.
* Prepares estimates and orders required amounts of materials for projects.
* Supervises, loads and unloads large amounts and weights of materials and debris to and from trucks.
* Directs and supervises roadway patching, brush cutting, and the collection and disposal of trash and brush.
* Supervises and performs minor maintenance and repair of assigned equipment.
* Directs and participates in beach and drainage maintenance operations.
* Directs and constructs, installs and repairs wood and metal structures and signposts.
* Coordinates with vendors how much and when materials will be delivered to job site.
* Transports supplies, materials and personnel to and from work sites.
* Coordinates with fleet department for repairs and maintenance of equipment.
* Flags traffic as needed.
* Communicates with residents, handle complaints, and inform residents of current/future construction on their roads and answer any questions from residents.
* Maintains daily activity reports.
* Maintains inventory of parts and supplies.
* Performs related work as assigned.
** Minimum

Education and Experience Requirements:

*** Requires High School diploma or GED equivalent.
* Requires two years of experience in road, bridge, beach, drainage systems construction or repair or closely related experience.
** Physical Demands/Work Environment:
*** Physical demands refer to the requirements for physical exertion and coordination of limb and body movement.
** Unavoidable hazards refer to the job conditions that may lead to injury or health hazards even though precautions have been taken.
* The work is typically performed while sitting, standing, bending, crouching, or stooping. The employee frequently lifts light and heavy objects, climbs and operates tools or equipment.

The work is typically performed outdoors, occasionally in cold or inclement weather. The employee is exposed to noise, dust, dirt, grease, machinery and chemicals. The work requires the use of protective devices such as masks, goggles, gloves, etc.

Emergency Preparedness Tier Level:  3
** Special Certifications and Licenses:
** Must possess and maintain a valid state class A commercial license with an acceptable driving history.
