Position: Diesel Mechanic

Department: Transportation

Wage/Hour Status: Nonexempt

Immediate Supervisor: Director of Transportation

Pay Grade: Per Compensation Manual

Days Employed: Per Compensation Manual

Starting Date: Immediately

Location: Dickinson, Texas (Dickinson Independent School District Transportation)

Position Type: Full-Time

Position Summary

Maintain district vehicles operating in a safe and economically acceptable manner to contribute to the educational process of students.

Qualifications
  • High school diploma or general education degree (GED)
  • Acceptable driving record
  • Pass Texas Department of Public Safety physical including drug and alcohol screening
  • Acceptable criminal history check
  • Class A or B Commercial Driver License (CDL) with P and S endorsements
  • School bus certification
  • Current DOT physical
  • Ase certifications and TASBT certification (desired)
  • Ability to read and interpret documents such as safety rules, operating and maintenance instructions, and procedure manuals
  • Ability to write routine reports and correspondence
  • Ability to speak effectively to customers in small groups
  • Ability to add/subtract two digit numbers and multiply/divide with 10's and 100's
  • Ability to perform these operations using units of American money and weight measurement, volume, and distance
  • Ability to apply commonsense understanding to carry out detailed written or oral instructions
  • Ability to deal with problems involving a few concrete variables in standardized situations
  • Five years experience as a diesel mechanic (desired)
Major Responsibilities
  • Perform scheduled preventative maintenance on district vehicles
  • Complete tire repairs
  • Maintain work area clean and orderly
  • Diagnose and make mechanical repairs on district vehicles
  • Diagnose and repair electrical problems
  • Attend professional development as requested by the Fleet Manager
  • Repair/rebuild brakes
  • Perform tune-ups
  • Maintain tool chest provided by the district
  • Utilize the Automated Fleet Management System
  • Obtain Annual State Inspection License (required within 90 days of employment)
  • Perform troubleshooting and related repairs on district vehicles
  • Maintain ability to diagnose, repair, rebuild and make necessary adjustments on all vehicle systems
  • Maintain thorough knowledge and ability to repair components on all systems, including operating shop equipment
  • Substitute as a Bus Driver or Monitor as needed
  • Texas Railroad Commission certification (required within 180 days of employment)
  • Other duties assigned by Shop Supervisor/Fleet Manager or Director of Transportation
Physical Demands & Environmental Factors
  • Regularly required to stand, walk, use hands to handle objects, tools, controls, and talk or hear; frequently reach with hands and arms; occasionally sit; frequently squat, stoop or kneel; reach above head and forward; use hand strength to grasp tools; frequently lift/move up to 50 pounds; specific vision, depth perception, and ability to adjust
  • Work near moving mechanical buses and equipment; frequently work with toxic or caustic chemicals (petroleum products, degreasers, gases fumes, and sprays); occasionally work in outside weather conditions and exposed to fumes or airborne particles; must meet deadlines with severe time constraints; noise level usually loud and occasionally
  • Dress must be clean, neat, in a manner appropriate for assignment, and in accordance with any additional standards; visible body piercings (except earrings) not allowed
Evaluation

Performance of this position will be evaluated annually.
