Job Description

AIS is seeking a dually certified Teacher of the Deaf/Hard of Hearing (ToDHH) and Teacher of the Visually Impaired (TVI) to join our team of independent contractors serving students in the Dickson, Tennessee area. This is a full-time position with the option to work in person or remotely.

Both ToDHHs and TVIs are itinerant professionals who partner with school divisions to deliver high-quality services to students with hearing and/or visual impairments from preschool through high school.

The dual ToDHH/TVI serves as a key member of each student’s educational team. Responsibilities include conducting comprehensive assessments, identifying student strengths and needs, delivering direct instruction, participating in IEP development, and consulting with school staff, families, and outside agencies.

You will provide specialized instruction in:

• Access to and use of visual materials
• Low- and high-tech assistive technologies
• Braille, low vision skills, and accommodations for visual impairments
• Instruction in the Expanded Core Curriculum

This role requires strong knowledge of evidence-based practices, disability-specific instructional strategies, and best practices for serving students with sensory impairments.

• Utilize evidence-based practices to assess and develop auditory skills, language, and academic achievement.
• Comply with federal, state, and local procedural guidelines for special education services.
• Participate in the development and implementation of IEPs for students eligible for Hearing Impairment (HI) services.
• Provide ethical, data-driven instruction and treatment, with ongoing analysis of auditory, language, and academic progress.
• Communicate and consult effectively with students, parents, teachers, administrators, and outside agency professionals.
• Support understanding and use of communication modalities and hearing assistive technologies.

• Conduct comprehensive assessments and provide direct and consultative services to students with visual impairments and blindness.
• Assist in the development and implementation of IEPs specific to visual impairments.
• Provide instruction in Braille, low vision skills, and use of assistive technology.
• Conduct and document FVA/LMA assessments and related recommendations.
• Provide consultation and training to teachers, service providers, and families.
• Support students in accessing the curriculum through appropriate materials, accommodations, and adaptive technology.

The ideal candidate will have a strong working knowledge of:

• Assessment and instructional strategies for both hearing and visual impairments
• Evidence-based practices and research in both fields
• Assistive technology: low-tech and high-tech AT for visual impairments, as well as hearing assistive technologies
• Communication modalities and their educational applications
• Special education regulations, policies, and procedural guidelines
• Roles and responsibilities of ToDHHs and TVIs in school environments
• Experience writing and implementing IEPs and 504 Plans
• Experience providing remote services with high-quality engagement
• Excellent interpersonal, communication, and organizational skills
• Ability to collaborate effectively with parents, school staff, and service providers
• Ability to recognize and respond to individual student differences
• Working knowledge of Braille and low-vision instructional strategies

Required:

Tennessee Teaching License with endorsements in Hearing Impairment and Visual Impairments

Preferred:
Prior experience as a ToDHH and/or TVI
