Purpose:
This role supervises two or more full‑time skilled technicians who perform field maintenance, inspection, installation, and repair tasks in one or more areas such as system protection (line locating and distribution system inspections), meter replacement and installation, service (tap) and system connections, valve, hydrant, and back‑flow device inspection, testing, maintenance, and repair, flushing, flow testing, and routine and emergency valve shutouts.
The supervisor is fully qualified to perform complex functions on industrial and commercial accounts.
- Assign personnel to shifts and plan daily schedules to provide inspection and testing, service/meter connection installations, valves, hydrants, and back‑flow devices, coordinating the schedule to ensure effective field service resource utilization.
- Oversee human resource functions of the assigned team, including hiring, firing, performance appraisals, coaching, counseling, salary and job change recommendations, and working with HSE and training teams to ensure safety and process training compliance.
- Prepare work orders manually or from a system as required and prepare work‑related reports, procurement requisitions, charts, graphs, and data submittal requirements accurately and timely.
- Establish inspection and maintenance schedules for service lines, replacements, and leaks, and assist in diagnosing and evaluating complex equipment and process failures.
- Ensure consistent field service and quality assurance procedures are followed and that uniform recordkeeping is performed facility‑wide.
- Provide leadership in achieving safety goals, proactively manage safety and environmental issues, and ensure compliance with federal and state standards, including Hazardous Waste Disposal and Air Quality Standards.
- Ensure equipment, field service vehicles, and work areas are clean and that waste is disposed of according to safety and environmental policies; operate vehicles for field service purposes.
- Occasionally fill in or help handle excess field service demands.
- Oversee day‑to‑day operations, initiate and communicate personnel actions, model and teach compliance with all work practices, policies and procedures.
- Follow established operational, process control, safety, and emergency response procedures, determine means or processes to achieve objectives set at higher levels, evaluate methods and recommend improvements.
- Proactively prevent non‑compliances and act immediately when a challenging situation has the potential to worsen; report periodically with pre‑authorized actions recorded and reported at regular weekly or monthly meetings.
- Ensure business initiatives and goals are communicated to employees, encourage open communication, respect, and collaborative problem solving; coach staff to adhere to values, policies, standards, and improve safety, quality, and process reliability cost‑effectively.
- Interface daily with Engineering, Quality Control, and Purchasing teams.
- Spends most of the time in a field environment; occasionally works in an office, maintenance or repair shop.
- Typically spends 85% of the time exposed to outdoor conditions, sometimes inclement weather.
- Company service vehicles are used as required.
- May serve rotational 24‑hour emergency on‑call.
- Possible work hazards include exposure to fumes, dust, toxic and caustic chemicals, noise, rotating machinery, high pressure, hot and cold temperatures, slippery surfaces, water and electrical hazards.
