School Counselor

Bishop McNamara High School is a private, Catholic co-educational high school in the Holy Cross tradition, offering its students a challenging college preparatory curriculum and a complete range of athletics and activities. The school is located in Forestville, Maryland, about 10 minutes from Washington, D.C.

Bishop McNamara High School has an opening to join the Counseling Department for the  school year to assist and guide students. You would be supported by a collaborative team of experienced counselors and mentors.

School Counselors educate students' hearts and minds in a way that is consistent with our shared vocation as Holy Cross educators. Full-time counselors work with an assigned grade-level of students to address the personal, social, emotional, spiritual, academic, and college and career development needs of each individual student. By collaborating with colleagues and families, counselors play an essential role in fulfilling the school's mission;

to ensure our students grow in their knowledge, skills, understanding and character.

Essential Duties & Responsibilities

  • Collaborate with families/teachers/administrators/community for student success
  • Comprehensive understanding of the college admissions processes
  • Provide student academic planning and goal setting
  • Identify student issues, needs and challenges
  • Help students apply academic achievement strategies
  • Hold counseling classroom lessons based on student success standards
  • Maintain current awareness of college admissions trends, standardized testing policies, and higher education developments
  • Guide students through all stages of the college search and application process, from initial exploration through final enrollment decisions
  • Provide career exploration guidance integrated with academic and college planning for students
  • Assist students in identifying personal strengths, interests, and post-secondary goals through individual meetings and group sessions
  • Guide students in resume preparation and professional development skills
  • Refer students for long-term support

Qualifications

  • Bachelor's or Master's degree in counseling, education or a related field
  • School Counseling related license(s) preferred
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills.
  • Excellent interpersonal skills, ability to listen well, and to positively represent the organization and its mission.
  • Strong organizational skills, attention to detail, and ability to manage multiple projects and deadlines.
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office programs, as well as Google Workspace.

Physical Demands

Must have the ability to sit and stand for extended periods of time; exhibit manual dexterity to enter data into a computer; to see and read a computer screen and printed material with or without vision aids; hear and understand speech at normal classroom levels, outdoors, and on the telephone; speak in audible tones so that others may understand clearly in normal classrooms, outdoors, and on the telephone;

physical agility to lift up to 25 pounds; to bend, stoop, climb stairs, and reach overhead.

Location/Travel While Bishop McNamara High School is located in Forestville, MD, you may live anywhere in the surrounding region, but be willing to make any commute to the school.
