Position

Prince George’s County Office of Central Services is seeking qualified applicants to fill a Plumber I/II (Plumber 1A), grade A-12/13
, within its Facilities Operation and Management Division
.

About the Position

This is an entry level, skilled plumbing position, whereby the incumbent performs installation, renovation, maintenance and repair of a variety of plumbing systems, appliances, and equipment. This position will work in various County facilities, including the Department of Corrections, the Office of the Sheriff and the Prince George’s Police Department. The incumbent performs routine plumbing work as a member of a crew and assists with major or complex assignments under the close supervision of the Master Plumber and Facilities Maintenance Supervisor.

The incumbent will work at various County facilities and may be required to work shift/day or evening hours. The incumbent must also be available on a twenty-four (24) hour basis to receive and respond to emergency service calls. Upon the satisfactory completion of the probationary period, the position incumbent may, at the discretion of management, be promoted to the II full performance level.

the Agency

The Office of Central Services is a multifaceted agency of the Prince George’s County Government providing government-wide, mission critical support services in the areas of facilities operations and management, building design & construction, real estate services, fleet management, and general services. We make government operations operate better for the government.

  • Installs, repairs and performs preventive maintenance on plumbing, gas and HVAC systems at county buildings/structures at an entry-level or journeyman level.
  • Reports routine and emergency issues within county buildings.
  • Performs pipe-fitting work on fire sprinkler systems, compressed air lines, storage tanks, and fuel lines.
  • Observes all safety rules and practices as established by the Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA), State of Maryland and the County.
  • Willingly and cooperatively performs tasks and duties which may not be specifically listed in the class specification or position description, but which are within the general occupational category and responsibility level typically associated with the employee’s class for work.
Minimum Qualifications
  • Graduation from high school or an equivalent GED
  • Supplemented by experience in a recognized apprenticeship program in the trade
  • Must maintain a valid Driver’s license with six (6) points or less

An equivalent combination of education and experience may be accepted.

Preferred Qualifications
  • Possess a Journeyman Plumbers License issued by either the State of Maryland or the Washington Suburban Sanitary Commission (WSSC)
  • Possess at least two (2) years of experience working at an independent level in the commercial service area

Conditions of Employment
  • Meet all training and performance standards and demonstrate proficiency as required by the agency.
  • Wear and use agency protective apparel and equipment in the performance of their assigned duties.
  • Successfully pass preemployment checks which may include reference checks, background investigations, and drug screenings, where applicable.
  • Be willing and able to serve as an essential employee. Essential employees are expected to report during standard or non-standard hours as operations necessitate, or during emergencies. Essential employees are expected to report or remain at work when other County employees are granted Administrative Leave.
  • Must maintain a valid Driver’s license with six (6) points or less.
  • Be available to work day and/or evening shifts as scheduled.
  • Willing to respond to emergency service calls on a 24-hour basis.
  • Must pass a physical examination, drug test and background check.
  • Complete an approved Cross Connection/Backflow Prevention Certification Program within six (6) months of employment.
