The Prince George's County Department of Public Works & Transportation (DPW&T) is currently seeking highly qualified applicants to fill a Senior Traffic Service Worker (Traffic Service Worker 3A), grade A13, position in the Office of Highway Maintenance.

About the Position

This is senior-level skilled work in the installation and maintenance of traffic control devices and signals. Individuals in this position perform the more difficult and specialized tasks related to the program to which they are assigned and normally function as crew leaders. Assignments offer opportunities for independent judgment under the general supervision of a higher-level technical supervisor. Work is performed in accordance with established departmental policies and procedures.

This position is considered essential.

About The Agency

The Department of Public Works and Transportation (DPW&T) is responsible for nearly 2,000 miles of County-maintained roadways that range from rural to urban classifications. The transportation infrastructure includes 900 bridges, as well as shoulders, sidewalks, curbs/gutters, stormwater management facilities, driveway aprons and nearly 3,000 acres of grassy area -- all of which are maintained by staff of the Department. DPW&T's workforce keeps the County's various services moving by performing a myriad of activities which include removing snow and ice from County-maintained roadways, upgrading traffic signals, installing streetlights, clearing fallen trees, unclogging drainage inlets and maintaining stormwater management facilities, as well as performing roadway repairs ranging from potholes and sidewalk trip hazards to bridge repairs and resurfacing projects and more.

of Work
  • Performs the more complex and difficult work assignments in the installation and maintenance of traffic signals.
  • Able to configure traffic control devices, electronic message boards and be knowledgably about other Intelligent transportation systems.
  • Leads a crew of subordinates and participates in the installation and maintenance of traffic sign and markings on pavements.
  • Operates a variety of automotive, mechanical, and hydraulic equipment, including a handheld computer in order to accomplish divisional mission.
  • Performs preventive/routine maintenance and repairs on of traffic control devices.
  • Prepares daily activity reports and maintains records related to assigned program.
  • Performs inventory of traffic control devices in accordance with agency police and procedures.
  • Performs and maintains specialized equipment such as traffic signal cabinets, controllers, Video detection cameras, Conflict monitors and bucket trucks.
  • Performs break-fix and troubleshooting activities on electrical and mechanical issues pertaining to traffic signals, traffic cabinets, traffic controllers, and video detection cameras related equipment.
  • Assists the supervisor with the daily operation of program to which assigned.
  • Willingly and cooperatively performs tasks and duties which may not be specifically listed in the class specification or position description, but which are within the general occupational category and responsibility level typically associated with the employee's class of work.
Qualifications

Minimum Qualifications Candidates must meet all minimum qualifications listed below to be eligible for additional consideration:

  • Graduation from high school or a G.E.D certificate.
  • Two (2) years of experience in traffic control operations.
  • Possession of a valid driver's license.
  • Willing to work outdoors in any kind of weather.
  • Willing to respond to emergency service calls.

An equivalent combination of education and experience which provides the required knowledges, skills and abilities may be considered.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Previous experience working with electrical, mechanical, construction and traffic safety background.
  • Ability to perform manual labor around shop facility and signalized intersections safely, effectively and efficiently.
  • Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships and communication with supervisors, co-workers, contractors and the general public.
  • Ability to operate small hand-held power equipment (drills, soft/chop saws, impact wrenches, jigsaws).
