The Prince George's County Department of Public Works & Transportation (DPW&T) is currently seeking highly qualified applicants to fill a Traffic Service Worker
- Traffic Signals (Traffic Service Worker 1A) grade A08 position in the Office of Highway Maintenance.

About the Position:
This is entry-level semi-skilled and skilled work responsible for the installation and maintenance of traffic control devices. Employees assigned to this class work with a crew or alone depending upon the nature of the assignment. Work is performed under the general supervision of a higher-level position or technical superior. Technical guidance may be exercised over subordinate level traffic service workers by positions assigned to this class.

This position is considered essential.

About The Agency:
The Department of Public Works and Transportation (DPW&T) is responsible for nearly 2,000 miles of County-maintained roadways that range from rural to urban classifications. The transportation infrastructure includes 900 bridges, as well as shoulders, sidewalks, curbs/gutters, stormwater management facilities, driveway aprons and nearly 3,000 acres of grassy area -- all of which are maintained by staff of the Department. DPW&T's workforce keeps the County's various services moving by performing a myriad of activities which include removing snow and ice from County-maintained roadways, upgrading traffic signals, installing streetlights, clearing fallen trees, unclogging drainage inlets and maintaining stormwater management facilities, as well as performing roadway repairs ranging from potholes and sidewalk trip hazards to bridge repairs and resurfacing projects and more.

Examples of Work:

  • Performs entry-level routine and less complex work assignments in the installation and maintenance of traffic signs, signals, and markings on pavements.
  • Operates automotive, mechanical, hydraulic and other equipment in order to install and maintains traffic signals.
  • Performs preventive/routine maintenance and repairs on equipment and traffic signals.
  • Helps to maintain traffic signal cabinets, controllers, Video detection cameras, Conflict monitors and operate bucket trucks.
  • Prepares daily activity reports and handles appropriate maintenance records.
  • May assist with sign fabrication and deployment activities.
  • Willingly and cooperatively performs tasks and duties which may not be specifically listed in the class specification or position description, but which are within the general occupational category and responsibility level typically associated with the employee's class of work.

Qualifications:

Minimum Qualifications Candidates must meet all minimum qualifications listed below to be eligible for additional consideration:

  • Graduation from high school or a G.E.D certificate.
  • Possess a valid driver's license.
  • Must be willing to work outdoors in any kind of weather.
  • Must be willing to respond to emergency service calls on a 24-hour basis.

An equivalent combination of education and experience which provides the required knowledges, skills and abilities may be considered.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Previous experience working with electrical, mechanical, construction and traffic safety background.
  • Ability to operate small hand-held power equipment (drills, soft/chop saws, impact wrenches, jigsaws).
  • Ability to perform manual labor around shop facility and signalized intersections safely, effectively and efficiently.
  • Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships and communication with supervisors, co-workers, contractors and the general public.
  • Willingness to perform over-head and aerial maintenance duties.
