Overview
The Newcomb Department of Music in the School of Liberal Arts at Tulane University is seeking an assistant professor of music (tenure-track) with expertise in the history and practice of Black American music. We wish to hire a candidate with commitment to contributing to the body of research on music associated with Black American culture, including, but not limited to, Blues, Gospel, Jazz, R 'n’ B, Soul, Funk and/or Hip-Hop, as well as the music of the broader African diaspora.
The position has a start date of July 1, 2026.
- Teach a 2/2 teaching load for music majors as well as general population students, including courses such as “Jazz History,” “New Orleans Music,” and other courses in Black American music history, theory and/or performance, depending on the candidate’s experience and expertise.
- Mentor and advise undergraduate and graduate (Master’s) students.
- Foster connections with musical communities and scenes in New Orleans.
- Maintain an active research/creative production/performance portfolio in line with tenure expectations.
- Expertise in the history and practice of Black American music and related fields (e.g., Blues, Gospel, Jazz, R ’n’ B, Soul, Funk and/or Hip-Hop) with potential to contribute to research on Black American culture and the broader African diaspora.
- Experience teaching at the college or university level and a record of research and/or creative output.
- Ability to foster connections with musical communities and scenes in New Orleans.
- Commitment to a tenure-track position at an R1 research institution.
- Active research/creative portfolio as a scholar or scholar-artist.
