Behavior Paraprofessional
The Behavioral Paraprofessional provides school-based interventions and support to students that exhibit unregulated emotions or unsafe behavior. The primary goal is to support the implementation of behavior intervention plans (BIPs), foster emotional regulation, and help students bridge the gap between their behavioral challenges and academic success.
Employment qualifications include a high school diploma and 48 hours college credit or Para Pro Assessment. At least one year of experience in working with students or in a school setting is preferred.
Knowledge, skills, and abilities include commitment to personal growth, the ability to keep information confidential, the ability to follow written or spoken instructions without supervision, strong communication and decision making skills, knowledge of student's needs, growth, and development, and knowledge of de-escalation skills and de-escalation behaviors.
Duties and responsibilities include utilizing and supporting implementation of Behavior Intervention Plans (BIP), assisting students in de-escalation techniques, developing relationships with students and relating well to multiple ages of students, assisting students in navigating transitions, managing frustrations, and staying engaged in the general education classroom, utilizing approved crisis intervention techniques to safely de-escalate challenging behaviors and support a safe learning environment for all students, attending staff meetings, training sessions and workshops as required, supporting in the collection and documentation of Behavior Intervention Data, reviewing physical surroundings for safety, especially in crisis situations, teaching and modeling social emotional skills, such as self-advocacy, conflict resolution and coping strategies, communicating regularly with teachers, administrators and district SEL support staff to ensure a consistent approach across all buildings, and maintaining confidentiality.
Physical requirements include sitting, using hands to handle, or feel and talking and hearing. The employee is occasionally required to stand, walk and reach with hands and arms. The employee must regularly lift and/or move up to 50 pounds. The work environment is in a classroom setting with a usually moderate noise level.
