Position Summary:Under the supervision of the Planning, Zoning and Environmental Health Director, the Assistant Planning Coordinator is involved in the performance of various clerical duties and field technician support to the Director. Responsibilities involve frequent public and interdepartmental contact through research, conveying messages and information.

Essential Functions Statement(s)- Ensure compliance with all countywide and departmental policies, procedures, and safety regulations;
- Enter planning and zoning activity into Microsoft software program including inspections conditional use, building, etc.), permits, soil/water samples and a roster of clients’ names, addresses, and dates;
- File records, reports, and documentation, utilizing alphabetical, numerical, or U.S. Rectangular Survey Systems.;
- Serves as primary point of contact for citizens, developers, and professionals, providing information and assistance on planning, zoning, development procedures, and regulations while maintaining tact and confidentiality;
- Assist with special outreach events and educational initiatives, such as the County;
- Create and revise departmental forms, letters, handouts and other materials as regulations, statutes and public health necessitates;
- Manage the department website, including updating content as needed or directed;
- Assist in regulating rural land development, ensuring adherence to subdivision regulations;
- Assist in reviewing site plans, plats, and developing proposals for compliance with county regulations;
- Assist in investigating zoning complaints, address violations, and serve as technical resource to the public regarding land use;
- Assist with the management, review, and issuing permits for zoning, and flood plains;
- Conducts research, compiles data, and assists with report preparation related to planning and zoning issues;
- Assist with contacting all agencies of new conditional land use requests and for new residential development;
- Assist with field inspections of wastewater systems, water wells, and performing water quality screenings;
- Assist with maintaining Planning and Zoning case files and resolutions.
- Other related duties as necessary or required.
QUALIFICATIONS:
- Must be 18 years of age;
- Must be authorized to work in the U.S.;
- Pass a pre-employment drug screen and health assessment;
- Pass a criminal background check;
- Possess and maintain a valid Kansas Driver’s License.
Experience
This is an entry-level position. Two years of planning experience preferred or three years of broad administrative experience in business, professional or governmental office.
EducationHigh school diploma or equivalent required. A degree in a related field is preferred.
SkillsGeneral knowledge of the county roads, townships, and incorporated areas. Ability to locate parcels via the US Rectangular Survey System. Strong interpersonal skills, written precision, and attention to detail are essential.
Problem SolvingProblem-solving in this position relates to the setting of priorities, the proper handling of citizen complaints, the ability to search records to determine property ownership/descriptions, and math computations required.
