The purpose of this position is to supervise, teach, and instruct youth in various games, arts and crafts, and leisure skills in a camp environment that is for children ages 5 to 12. Counselor will be responsible for a designated group during the day to provide an exceptional camp experience. Under the general supervision of the Recreation Manager and the Recreation Coordinator, Camp Counselors will assist with the planning, organization, supervision and implementation of a daily activity schedule for up to 15 elementary school aged children.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities- Acting as a positive role model/mentor to participants and volunteer counselors in training.
- Developing and leading daily activities with campers ranging from indoor and outdoor games, sports, fitness activities, arts and crafts that relate to the theme of the week.
- Providing positive and thorough interaction between parents and staff.
- Overseeing the enforcement of camp rules at all times.
- Responsible for campers on field trips, to various locations.
- Completing accurate accidents, behavior and/or discipline reports.
- Rendering first aid in cases of minor injuries.
- Assisting with light-duty cleaning, and the setup and breakdown of tables and chairs.
- Performing miscellaneous tasks as directed.
- A minimum of one (1) year experience working paid or as a volunteer in a recreational camp setting, recreation program, classroom, after school setting, daycare facility, or related activity is preferred.
- Applicant must have the ability to follow oral and written instructions.
- Applicant must have exceptional communication skills.
- Applicant must be able to perform the essential functions of this role, with or without an accommodation.
- Must possess a valid State of Georgia Driver’s License (Class
C) and a satisfactory Motor Vehicle Record (MVR).
- Applicant must be 17 years of age or older.
- Applicant must provide his or her own transportation.
- Applicant must be able to work a flexible daytime schedule.
- Applicant must be able to attend mandatory Camp Staff orientation/trainings sessions.
- Regular and consistent attendance is required.
- Applicant must clear a criminal background check and fingerprinting.
- Applicant must pass a drug screen.
- Hired applicants must obtain a valid certificate of course completion for First Aid training that includes Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation (CPR) for Children and Infants, first aid, and AED. This training must be from the American Red Cross or American Heart Association. The City of Doraville will offer a CPR course during the week of camp training for all those who need this certification.
