Summary of Position:
The Doraville Library (jointly operated by the City of Doraville and DeKalb County Public Library) seeks a dedicated Library Specialist to join our dynamic team. This role is essential in delivering exceptional public service, developing engaging community programming, and providing access to information resources for a diverse, vibrant patron base. Serving as a primary face of the library, the Library Specialist fosters an inclusive, welcoming environment, assists patrons with varied inquiries and technology issues, and handles day-to-day circulation operations.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities:
- Provides courteous, professional reference and readers’ advisory assistance, helping patrons locate materials, navigate the internet, and access digital library resources.
- Plans and presents programming for patrons of all ages, and may serve as a community contact for planning special programs and events.
- Sorts and shelves books; participates in shelf reading, weeding, and shifting the collections as needed.
- Checks in/out library materials, registers patrons for library cards, processes interlibrary loans, and collects fees and fines.
- Assists patrons with use of the copy machine and printer as well as providing other technical assistance as needed.
- Maintains patron confidentiality and privacy in accordance with library policies, professional ethics, and relevant local, state, and federal laws.
- Attends DeKalb County Public Library trainings and meetings and participates actively in DCPL initiatives.
- Assists with planning and logistics associated with the upcoming relocation to a new library facility.
- Performs other related duties as required.
Minimum Qualifications:
- Associate’s degree or higher from an accredited institution.
- Experience in library services, education, customer service, or a related field; or an equivalent combination of education, training and experience which provides the required knowledge, skills and abilities.
Preferred Qualifications:
- Master’s degree in Library and Information Science from an ALA-accredited institution.
- Previous experience in a public library setting and familiarity with integrated library systems.
- Fluency in Spanish.
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:
- Experience with Microsoft Office and Google Workspace applications.
- Demonstrates strong oral and written communication skills.
- Demonstrates a proactive, self-motivated approach to daily responsibilities and applies creative problem-solving to improve library services, programs, and patron experiences.
- Ability to communicate patiently, effectively, and compassionately with diverse patrons, including individuals experiencing mental health challenges or displaying difficult or disruptive behaviors.
- Ability to work effectively in a high-visibility public environment, responding to patron inquiries with professionalism and composure.
Work is performed primarily in a library environment, as well as off-site at schools and community locations for outreach programs and events. Regular evening and weekend shifts are required on a rotating basis.
This role requires moderate physical effort, including standing, stooping, kneeling, crouching, and pushing or pulling loaded book carts and materials weighing up to 20 pounds. Duties also involve extended periods of sitting or standing at a computer workstation.
