Position: Recreation Leader I (Programs)

This is a full-time position responsible for supervisory work in the management and coordination of programs for Leisure Services. The incumbent is responsible for researching, developing, organizing, and supervising programs and city-wide special events.

Responsibilities
  • Plan, organize, implement, and supervise new and assigned special events and programs (for youth, adults, senior adults, and/or therapeutics).
  • Assist in coordinating, developing, organizing, and implementing summer camp programs and events and ensure events and programs follow all laws, policies, regulations, and departmental goals.
  • Assist in coordinating, developing, organizing, and implementing after school programs and events and ensure events and programs follow all laws, policies, regulation, and departmental goals.
  • Develop, recommend, coordinate, and implement new departmental special events, education and cultural related programs that meet community needs.
  • Evaluate and assess the effectiveness of each programming area and implement improvements (within scope) as needed or provide recommendations to supervisor.
  • Track program/event services provided to include monitoring results and providing operational reports as needed.
  • Research and investigate grant/funding opportunities for new program implementation and identify available funding to improve current programs.
  • Recruit sponsors to finance various programs and/or events.
  • Supervise and monitor programs and activities to enforce and ensure rules and department/safety standards are adhered.
  • Prepare news articles, press releases, calendar events, brochures, advertisement flyers, social media posts, and related public information/relation materials.
  • Coordinate event and program recruitment and registration.
  • Make recommendations for changes and/or expansions to programs and events.
  • Supervise, train, hire, and advise volunteer personnel, part time, and seasonal employees.
  • Clean, maintain, and prepare playground, community center facilities and/or event locations for recreation events as scheduled.
  • Perform related duties.
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
  • Knowledge of childcare principles and practices.
  • Knowledge of facility maintenance principles.
  • Knowledge of department policies and procedures.
  • Skill in the safe operation of delivery vehicle.
  • Skill in inventorying equipment and supplies.
  • Skill in custodial maintenance of public facilities.
  • Skill in planning.
  • Skill in decision making and problem solving.
  • Skill in public and interpersonal relations.
  • Skill in oral and written communication.
  • Ability to work at least eight (8) hours per day, forty (40) hours per week, or such hours as the City determines necessary to meet operational requirements.
  • Ability to work overtime as the City determines necessary to meet operational requirements.
  • Ability to work weekends and holidays as the City determines necessary to meet operational requirements.
Qualifications
  • Graduation from standard senior high school or GED, as recognized by the United States Department of Education (USDE) or Council for Higher Education Accreditation (CHEA).
  • One (1) year recent experience in recreational programming, program development (youth, adult, senior adult, and/or therapeutics).
  • One (1) year recent experience in managing and/or developing events for the public.
  • Six (6) months recent experience in the use of Microsoft Office (Word and Excel).
  • Six (6) months recent recreational programming experience (examples: Esports tournament, Adult Easter Egg Hunt, Mother/Son Olympics, Santa and Pet Photo event, etc.).
  • Possession of a current and valid CPR/AED certificate from the American Red Cross or American Heart Association is preferred.
  • Graduation from an accredited college or university with a degree in Recreation, Marketing, Business Administration, Public Administration, Education, Hospitality Management, or closely related field is preferred.
  • Four (4) months recent (within the last two years) seasonal or part-time employment with the City of Dothan performing responsibilities in recreational, educational events, and/or athletic programs is preferred.
