Position: Maintenance/Construction Operator (PW)

Maintenance/Construction Operator (Dothan Utilities)

This position is for manual and semi-skilled work in maintaining the city's storm sewers, streets, and rights of way (ROW). Maintenance/Construction Operators are responsible for performing a variety of manual and semi-skilled tasks in the maintenance and installation of the city's storm sewer system and streets.

Assignments are received in written or verbal form, and may be accompanied by rough sketches or blueprints. Work is normally performed under close supervision of a Maintenance Construction Foreman and is checked in progress and upon completion to assure compliance with accepted standards of construction and maintenance for public improvements; and in compliance with City laws and ordinances.

Examples of work performed include laying pipe on grade in the construction of storm sewers, digging trenches, laying and joining pipe, mixing mortar and carrying mortar and brick for construction of catch basins, curbs and bridges, mixing, pouring and finishing concrete, operating dump truck to haul materials and pull equipment trailers, ensuring job sites are coned off for safety of workers and the general public, checking for gases present prior to workers entering confined spaces, laying brick for construction and repair of storm sewer manholes, spreading asphalt with hand tools to pave parking lots and streets, grading ditches with hand tools for laying pipe, using power saw and other tools to cut down trees and bushes for the maintenance and clearance of right of ways and easements, operating small tractors bush hog, and equipment in the construction and maintenance of storm system and streets, and performing routine maintenance on tools, equipment and vehicles.

The incumbent must be committed to a high standard of safety and be willing and able to comply with all safety laws and all of the City's safety policies and rules and must be willing to report safety violations and potential safety violations to appropriate supervisory or management personnel. The incumbent must maintain regular and acceptable attendance at such level as is determined by the City of Dothan and be regularly available and willing to work at least 8/10 hours per day, 40 hours per week, or such other hours per day or week as the City determines are necessary or desirable to meet its operational needs.

The incumbent must perform duties onsite, except those job duties which are customarily or by their nature performed offsite (such as offsite work meetings with City customers, clients or citizens, making deliveries to designated destinations, traveling to field offices to meet with subordinates or conduct training, etc.)

The incumbent must have knowledge of standards, tools, materials, methods and practices of maintaining streets and drainage and related equipment, occupational hazards and safety precautions of the work, inspection techniques and methods, skill in use and operation of tools and equipment used in area of assigned responsibility, and mental and physical ability to perform duties requiring heavy lifting and carrying; and work in unsanitary and hazardous environments.
