Job DescriptionThe Instructional Designer is responsible for designing, developing, and delivering engaging learning experiences that support UAB Medicine’s employees and leadership in the effective use of educational technologies. This role leads the planning and implementation of live training events, develops on demand learning resources, and provides end-user support within the learning management system (LMS). The Instructional Designer serves as a trusted partner and resource, helping users navigate technology with confidence while applying best practices in instructional design, adult learning, and digital learning innovation.
KeyDuties & Responsibilities
- Plan, design, and facilitate instructor‑led and virtual training sessions for LMS and educational technology tools, including development of curricula, facilitator guides, and participant materials
- Design and develop eLearning modules, job aids, videos, and other digital learning assets that support both instructor‑led and self‑directed learning
- Apply evidence‑based instructional design practices and incorporate interactive and multimedia elements to enhance engagement and learning outcomes
- Adapt learning solutions to meet the needs of diverse audiences (faculty, staff, students) and evaluate effectiveness to continuously improve training and content
- Serve as a primary point of contact for LMS and educational technology support, providing clear, calm, and solutions‑oriented assistance to end users
- Translate complex technical concepts into user‑friendly guidance and develop FAQs, guides, and troubleshooting resources to promote independent use
- Maintain working knowledge of LMS functionality and integrated educational technologies; evaluate and apply emerging trends to improve learning effectiveness and user experience
- Recommend and support implementation of new technologies and system updates to enhance teaching and learning
- Partner with leadership and departments to identify learning needs and design effective solutions
- Consult with subject matter experts and collaborate on cross‑functional teams to support learning initiatives and projects
- Communicate effectively with stakeholders to ensure alignment, clarity, and successful project outcomes
- Ensure all learning materials comply with accessibility standards (e.g., ADA, WCAG) and organizational guidelines
- Conduct quality reviews to ensure usability, clarity, consistency, and instructional effectiveness across all materials
Bachelor’s degree in a related field and three (2) years of related experience required. Work experience may NOT substitute for education requirement.
Preferred:
- Experience with learning management systems (e.g., Health Stream)
- Experience with eLearning authoring tools (e.g., Articulate, Captivate)
- Familiarity with accessibility standards and inclusive design practices
- Strong communication, facilitation, and problem‑solving skills
- Proven technical and online instructional ability
- Ability to be flexible, assertive and persuasive
- Detail‑oriented
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills
- Ability to communicate effectively with people from every socioeconomic, cultural and educational background
