Welding Lab Assistant

Under the supervision of the Welding Instructor and/or appropriate administrator, the Welding Lab Assistant provides support for the daily operation of the welding laboratory. The position assists with laboratory preparation, equipment and materials management, safety procedures, student activities, and maintenance of a safe, clean, and organized instructional environment. The position works closely with the Welding Instructor to support hands-on instruction and ensure students have the tools, equipment, materials, and work environment necessary to successfully complete laboratory activities.

The position may assist students with basic welding techniques and equipment operation within the scope of training, experience, and direction provided by the instructor.

Salary:
Based on education and experience commensurate with Salary Schedule H35 Rank 1 for 12 months (range: $41,240 - $49,302).

This position will be based initially at Wallace in Dothan, Alabama.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

Essential Functions:

Maintain Welding Laboratory

  • Maintains the welding laboratory in a safe, clean, orderly, and functional condition.
  • Assists with maintaining a safe laboratory environment and reinforces established welding safety practices.
  • Explains and reinforces appropriate safety precautions prior to laboratory or shop activities as directed by the Welding Instructor.
  • Assists with housekeeping, cleaning, and routine maintenance activities within the laboratory.
  • Prepares welding booths, equipment, tools, materials, supplies, and other resources necessary for assigned laboratory activities.
  • Issues and collects tools, equipment, materials, and supplies as appropriate.
  • Assists students with the proper purpose, use, handling, and care of laboratory materials and equipment under the direction of the Welding Instructor.
  • Organizes laboratory equipment, tools, and supplies for efficient access and use.
  • Maintains appropriate and secure storage of welding materials, supplies, tools, equipment, and related items.
  • Maintains inventory records and assists with monitoring the condition and availability of equipment, tools, materials, and supplies.
  • Identifies equipment, tool, facility, or safety concerns and reports them promptly to the Welding Instructor or appropriate administrator.
  • Keeps assigned laboratory areas, welding booths, classrooms, and work areas neat and orderly to support a quality learning environment.
  • Assists with preparing the laboratory for classes, demonstrations, testing, and other instructional activities.
  • Exercises appropriate stewardship of College facilities, equipment, tools, materials, and supplies.

Technical Laboratory Assistance

  • Provides technical laboratory assistance to students in the area of welding and related technical disciplines under the direction of the Welding Instructor.
  • Demonstrates knowledge of welding practices, equipment, tools, materials, and laboratory procedures appropriate to the position.
  • Assists students with the proper operation and use of welding equipment and tools within the scope of training and assigned responsibilities.
  • Provides students with basic technical assistance and guidance during laboratory activities.
  • Assesses student questions and needs and provides assistance at a level the student can understand.
  • Reinforces proper welding techniques, equipment operation, safety procedures, and laboratory practices as instructed by the Welding Instructor.
  • Assists with preparation and administration of laboratory activities, skills assessments, demonstrations, and testing as directed.
  • Recognizes when a student requires additional instruction or assistance and refers instructional or academic concerns to the Welding Instructor.
  • Does not independently establish course requirements, instructional objectives, grades, or academic evaluations unless specifically assigned and authorized.

Student Support

  • Maintains confidentiality of student, employee, and College information.
  • Supports student learning and successful completion of laboratory activities while working under the direction of the Welding Instructor.
  • Provides appropriate assistance and encouragement to students during laboratory activities.
  • Assists students in understanding laboratory procedures, equipment operation, and safety requirements.
  • Demonstrates sensitivity to student needs and circumstances.
  • Promotes a respectful, professional, and productive learning environment.
  • Monitors laboratory activities and communicates safety, equipment, attendance, or student concerns to the Welding Instructor.
