Overview

Our client, an employee‑owned media and communications organization with operations across the Midwest and Northeast, is seeking a Human Resources Manager to support its Madison, Wisconsin division. This role will partner with regional leadership to drive HR strategy, employee engagement, and talent development across a multi‑location media business.

The successful candidate will serve as the primary HR business partner for the Madison office, supporting approximately 30 employees across editorial, sales, and operational functions. This position requires a hands‑on generalist who can balance strategic initiatives with day‑to‑day employee relations in a fast‑paced media environment.

Key Responsibilities
  • Manage full‑cycle recruitment for editorial, sales, and operations roles
  • Oversee onboarding, training, and employee development programs
  • Serve as primary point of contact for employee relations matters and conflict resolution
  • Administer benefits programs, including ESOP coordination
  • Ensure compliance with federal, state, and local employment laws
  • Partner with leadership on workforce planning and organizational design
  • Support performance management cycles and compensation reviews
  • Drive culture and engagement initiatives across distributed teams
Required Qualifications
  • Bachelor's degree in Human Resources, Business Administration, or related field
  • 5+ years of progressive HR generalist experience
  • Strong knowledge of Wisconsin and federal employment law
  • Experience with HRIS systems and benefits administration
  • Excellent interpersonal and communication skills
  • Demonstrated ability to handle confidential information with discretion
Preferred Qualifications
  • SHRM-CP, SHRM-SCP, PHR, or SPHR certification
  • Experience in media, publishing, or creative industries
  • Familiarity with employee stock ownership plans (ESOPs)
  • Multi‑state HR compliance experience
