Associational Missions Strategist (ASM)

Personnel Committee General

Qualifications:

  • 1. Must meet the biblical qualifications for gospel ministry in accordance with 1 Tim 3:1-7.
  • 2. Must be a motivated person with deep Christian commitment and a sense of call to mission service.
  • 3. Must hold strong affirmative belief concerning Baptist doctrine, polity and practices.
  • 4. Must be thoroughly cooperative with the work of the Alabama Baptist State Convention and its entities and the Southern Baptist Convention and its agencies.
  • 5. Must have enough training and experience to enable him to plan, establish, coordinate, promote, conduct and evaluate the objectives of the association.
Principal Functions:
  • 1. To plan and implement a missions strategy which leads the association to fulfill its purpose and objectives.
  • 2. To minister to the churches and church leaders of the association.
  • 3. To provide administrative leadership to the association.
General Responsibilities:
  • 1. Missions strategy
    • a. Provide mission/ministry leadership to the association of churches; to foster a mission/ministry spirit; to initiate the starting of missions/churches; and to establish points of witness and ministry.
    • b. Involve the association’s program organizations and committees in mission/ministry service. Lead the association to organize in order to accomplish association mission/ministries.
    • c. Maintain denominational relationships to assist them in planning, promoting and implementing their programs of work as appropriate and reasonable.
    • d. Maintain an appropriate relationship to business, social, government, education, religious and welfare groups to infuse Christian values and to share resources.
    • e. The ASM may conduct revivals for up to two weeks out of the Association and up to four weeks in the Association, providing his work in the Association is not adversely affected. Revivals in the Association that exceed four must first be approved by the Personnel Committee.
  • 2. Ministry to churches and church leaders.
    • a. Work with pastors and other ministers in such areas as orientation to the association, support systems, pastoral care, conflict management, and personal development.
    • b. Help churches fulfill their purpose/objectives; work with pastor search committees; visit churches routinely; be available to assist churches as needed.
    • c. Teach and preach in specific churches as requested; and organize training events as needed. The ASM is free to accept honorariums when asked to supply preach in churches for regular or special services.
    • d. Strengthen relationships in the fellowship of churches; guide the churches in a harmonious Baptist faith and practice; and create an atmosphere of joint mission/ministry service.
    • e. The ASM may conduct revivals for up to two weeks out of the Association and up to four weeks in the Association, providing his work in the Association is not adversely affected. Revivals in the Association that exceed four must first be approved by the Personnel Committee.
  • 3. Administrative leadership.
    • a.Give general leadership in all aspects of associational life.
    • b.Discern priorities for allocating time (calendar), money (budget), and other resources.
    • c. Administer processes such as planning, organizing, enlisting, equipping, motivating, guiding, coordinating, communicating, and evaluating the total work of the association. Engage in long-range associational strategy planning to ensure a comprehensive plan for the association is being implemented and evaluated.
    • d.Manage the office, business affairs, staff, and publications.
