Position: POLICE OFFICER - PART-TIME

Under the supervision of the Shift Supervisor, the employee performs law enforcement activities on behalf of the City Police Department, patrol duties, processes civil and criminal papers, provides security for court proceedings and special events, and performs maintenance checks on equipment prior to each shift. The employee prepares, documents, and submits accurate reports, ensures equipment and uniforms are maintained and serviceable, provides traffic control and issues citations, and exercises quick, independent, and sound judgment during emergencies when superior officers are not available.

Work requires dedication to public service often made difficult by emotional or physical stress of events. This is an entry‑level, safety‑sensitive role subject to a pre‑employment background check and random drug screens.

Fairhope PD maintains a starting pay rate of $23.00 per hour. Additional pay may be offered based on prior law‑enforcement experience, military experience, higher education, and certifications. Offer rates will be discussed with candidates who proceed to an interview.

Tattoos Policy

The appearance of department members represents the department and its standards of professionalism; therefore reasonable restrictions will be placed on employees who choose to have visible tattoos or body art. Employees may have visible non‑offensive tattoos while conducting day‑to‑day operations. Visible tattoos must be covered by long‑sleeved uniforms when:

Public Speaking Events on behalf of the department
Media releases
Court (Federal, District, Circuit, Municipal and any other court proceeding)

Additional restrictions:

One wedding‑ring tattoo on the ring finger is allowed.
Tattooed make‑up giving the appearance of natural color and style is allowed (e.g., eyebrows, eyeliner).
No other visible tattoos are permitted on the head, face, neck (above the collar) or hands (below the wrist bone) unless authorized by the Chief of Police for special circumstances.
Tattoos depicting racist, indecent, extremist, lawless or offensive themes are prohibited. Tattoos that are sexist, sexual, racist, vulgar, anti‑social, violent, or discriminatory are also prohibited.
Any tattoo or body art associated with an organization or group that advocates intolerance or discrimination, that brings discredit upon the Department or violates its Vision, Mission and Values, is prohibited.

The final determination on the interpretation of a tattoo is made by the Chief of Police.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS Patrol Operations & Service Calls

Reports to shift supervisor for assigned area and instructions.

Patrols city businesses, schools, churches, private residences, and other special areas as directed; conducts building searches when necessary.

Makes notes during patrol of any situation that does not appear normal for the area, time, weather, traffic, or crowd.

Varies patrol route to prevent predictable patterns.

Responds to and investigates complaints; prepares written reports for each investigation.

Initiates investigation of complaints; informs supervisor and investigators of known facts, suspects, and situation.

Provides backup support for other law‑enforcement officers, including those from other agencies as required.

Issues Uniform Traffic Citations (UTCs) and electronic tickets for traffic violations.

Operates measuring devices to apprehend speeders.

Responds to traffic accidents; investigates accidents on public and private property; interviews victims and witnesses.

Establishes traffic control and police protection at incidents that may cause or attract crowds.

Performs crowd and traffic control at parades, funeral processions, and sporting events.

Reports defective streetlights, signs, road surfaces, or other public facilities.

Assists in conducting traffic surveys to identify problem areas.

Assists in removing disabled vehicles and obstructions from roadways.

Assists stranded motorists; keeps traffic moving smoothly and safely; watches for traffic violations; directs traffic; provides escorts for funeral processions; performs emergency relays such as blood transports as required.
