Position: Preventive Maintenance (PM) Field Technician - Earthmoving

Position Summary

The Preventive Maintenance (PM) Field Technician – Earthmoving is responsible for performing maintenance, repairs, and diagnostics on earthmoving heavy equipment, including bulldozers, excavators, loaders, graders, and other machinery used in construction, mining, and related industries. A strong focus on safety is paramount. The successful candidate will adhere to all safety guidelines and protocols as set forth by Thompson Tractor. This role requires a strong mechanical aptitude, technical expertise, and the ability to work independently in demanding field conditions.

Extensive on-the-job training, classroom instruction, and e-learning must be successfully completed to remain in the technician training program. The Technician will demonstrate initiative, commitment to teamwork, enthusiasm for customer service, and dedication to finding solutions in an efficient manner, and will advance in classification as attitude, skill level, and job performance allow.

Essential Responsibilities & Expectations
  • Conduct routine maintenance, inspections, and repairs on heavy equipment to ensure optimal performance, safety, and reliability
  • Troubleshoot, diagnose, and repair mechanical, hydraulic, and electrical systems; remove, install, disassemble, and reassemble parts
  • Utilize diagnostic tools, manuals, and technical expertise to identify and resolve equipment issues, malfunctions, and failures
  • Diagnose problems accurately and develop effective repair solutions
  • Perform scheduled preventive maintenance tasks, including fluid changes, filter replacements, component inspections, and lubrication to extend equipment lifespan and minimize unexpected breakdowns
  • Conduct comprehensive testing and inspections to ensure equipment meets safety standards and operational requirements, verifying proper functioning of controls, systems, and components
  • Maintain accurate records of maintenance and repair activities, including work performed, parts used, and labor hours; complete service reports, work orders, and other documentation promptly and accurately
  • Follow federal and state regulations regarding DOT/ driving
  • Coordinate with the Parts Department to identify, order, and receive required parts and components; maintain inventory levels and ensure adequate supply of critical parts
  • Adhere to all safety protocols, regulations, and company policies while working on equipment; promote a safe working environment for yourself and others
  • Wear Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) appropriate to the job site
  • Maintain and clean the service truck for safe operation; take proper care of the service truck
  • Be safety‑mindful at all times
  • Respond to field service calls and travel to job sites to perform on‑site repairs and maintenance; communicate effectively with customers, contractors, and team members to address equipment issues and provide technical support
  • Stay updated on the latest equipment models, technologies, and industry advancements through ongoing training and professional development

Qualifications
  • Education:

    High school diploma or equivalent
  • Experience:

    Minimum of one (1) year’s work experience involving mechanical repairs or a combination of relevant experience and equivalent technical education; experience with personal computers and basic typing skills required;
    Med Card and CDL preferred; MVR required
  • Skills and

    Competencies:

    Intermediate engine, transmission, hydraulic, and electrical diagnostic and repair skills; written and verbal communication skills required; basic computer skills required
  • Job Training:
    Area‑specific technical training; OSHA and MSHA required training; vendor technical sites (Infocast, Liftnet, SIMSi, etc.)

  • Working Conditions:

    Work typically performed in a service department shop or on customer job sites; exposure to physical risk and all‑weather conditions; standing on hard surfaces for extended periods
