This is a Federal Work Study (FWS) position and applicants must be eligible for the FWS program to qualify. The Financial Aid Office can help determine eligibility.
Position SummaryThe Student Off-Campus Literacy Tutor is responsible for working varied hours in a local K-12 classroom or public library, tutoring select students in the areas of reading, writing, and/or math, and assisting classroom teachers with other activities as needed.

Note:
Cochise College requires a post offer, pre-employment background screening of all employees.
Within the scope of college policies and procedures, this position:
Tutors and facilitates one-on-one sessions and study groups
Offers critical feedback on reading, writing and/or math assignments
Answers grammar, usage, punctuation and reading questions
Assists students with vocabulary and reading comprehension questions
Helps students clarify assignments and other material
Participates in workshops and orientations
Attends training sessions held for student staff
Assists lead teacher with general classroom duties
Performs other duties as assigned by the supervisor
General ExpectationsEmployees are expected to accomplish assigned duties in an efficient, effective and competent manner and to strive for improvement and excellence in all work performed. Additionally, employees must understand the comprehensive role of the community college and cooperate and work harmoniously with students, faculty and staff, and the public. Employees will follow all college policies, rules, regulations and guidelines as they relate to this position.
Education and Experience RequirementsEnrollment at Cochise College with a minimum of 6 credits per semester and 3 credits in the summer
Possess and maintain a 2.0 G.P.A.or higher
For reading or writing tutor position:
Completion of ENG 101 with a grade of “B” or better, preferred
For math tutor position:
Completion of Math 142 or 151, with a grade of “B” or better, preferred
Current Arizona DPS Fingerprint Clearance Card or ability to obtain, as required by the community host organization

Knowledge of and ability to follow college policies and procedures
Knowledge of and ability to operate a personal computer
Knowledge of current technologies and word processing, database, presentation, and spreadsheet software, specifically Microsoft Office applications
Skill in effectively communicating in person, by phone, email and text
Skill establishing and maintaining effective working relationships with other department staff, faculty, students, and the public
Ability to relate in a professional, helpful manner and to maintain composure when faced with difficult situations
Ability to organize and follow through
Ability to maintain confidentiality
Ability to promote a positive atmosphere of teamwork and cooperation
Work EnvironmentWork is primarily performed under general supervision. Incumbent generally performs work in a typical office setting with appropriate climate controls.
Physical RequirementsEssential functions of this position require: lifting, manual dexterity, ability to communicate.
Sedentary Work:
Exerting up to 10 pounds of force occasionally and/or a negligible amount of force frequently or constantly to lift, carry, push, pull or otherwise move objects, including the human body; involves sitting majority of time; walking and standing are required only occasionally and all other sedentary criteria are met
Mental Application:
Utilizes memory for details, verbal instructions, emotional stability, critical thinking, adaptability and creative problem solving skills are important
