Join our Team at South Georgia State College! SGSC is a residential state college of the University System of Georgia (USG). SGSC focuses on a core of strong teaching and personalized academic advising and has a long tradition of serving the people of Georgia. Job Summary

Serve as the first point of contact for patrons entering the library, ensuring a welcoming and positive environment conducive to study and learning. Supervise circulation activities and provide basic reference assistance, collection maintenance, and oversight of student workers. Employees are expected to take initiative and work independently following established practices, policies, and procedures.

Responsibilities
  • Oversee Circulation Services: maintain circulation desk functions including charging/discharging materials, processing reserves, overseeing patron accounts, receiving monies for fees, and ensuring policy adherence.
  • Supervise Student Workers: liaise with financial aid to identify student workers; make hiring recommendations; create schedules, train, supervise, approve time sheets, and evaluate student workers.
  • Collection Maintenance: supervise shelving and shelf-reading and other collection maintenance activities; assist with collection retrieval and inventory.
  • Administrative and Clerical Support: open and close the library facility as scheduled; secure Classroom 127 between classes; perform routine clerical duties such as answering phones and maintaining lists and schedules; collect and compile statistical data and submit various circulation-related reports; ensure furniture and equipment in public areas are in good order.
  • Perform Other Duties: perform all other duties as assigned by supervisor.
  • Customer Service and Marketing: provide excellent customer service to students, faculty, staff, and other patrons; communicate effectively to locate materials, answer questions, advise on library policies, and assist with printers and copiers; monitor public areas and assist with customer issues; create library displays, bulletin boards, and signage; assist with library events and activities.
Required Qualifications
  • Educational Requirements: Associate's Degree or two years of experience as a library assistant or equivalent combination of education and experience.

    Required Qualifications:

    Strong computer skills.
  • Required Experience: Customer Service experience.
Preferred Qualifications
  • Preferred Experience: Experience with automated library systems; experience working in an academic library; supervisory experience.

Proposed Salary: Commensurate with experience.

  • Abilities: Ability to communicate effectively and follow oral and written instructions; ability to search and retrieve information from traditional and electronic sources; ability to compile statistics and generate reports; ability to train, supervise, and evaluate student workers; ability to interact tactfully and courteously with patrons and colleagues.
  • Knowledge: Library procedures, automated library systems, and operation of standard library equipment.
  • Skills: Proficient in word processing, databases, spreadsheets, presentations, and graphics; excellent customer service skills.
