Job Summary
This role provides personalized, proactive advising to students facing academic challenges and helps to identify barriers to success. This position is also responsible for helping students explore appropriate careers and pathways and guiding students in pursing internships and other experiential learning opportunities. Engaging students in honest, solution-focused conversations, the Academic and Career Advisor for Student Success promotes the use of campus resources and uses tools such as goal setting and success plans to help navigate college life and beyond.
The Academic and Career Advisor serves as the advisor to students on academic probation and suspension and VA students. Reporting to the Associate Vice President for Student Success within Academic Affairs and Student Affairs, this position plays an important role in the Student Success team and is based primarily on the Douglas campus with travel to Waycross as needed.
Responsibilities
Student Orientation
- Participate in new student orientations and other advising and registration events.
Participate in a variety of initiatives to support student success.
Student Reports
- Maintain student records and report and track student progress.
Career Readiness Skills
- Assist students in career readiness skills.
Help students navigate selecting appropriate pathway based on career interests.
Workshops
- Create and plan workshops on career development topics
Campus Resources
- Create resources for campus community to help with aspects of course selection and academic recovery
Performs other duties as assigned by supervisor
- Performs other duties as assigned by supervisor.
Assist with Training
- Assist in training faculty and staff advisors.
Monitor Student Progress
- Monitor student academic progress and provide developmental programming focused on student academic needs.
Advise, monitor, and work closely with students on academic probation and those returning from academic suspension.
Advise Students
- Advise students in all academic pathways.
Participate in assessment of advising services
Degree Programs
- Understand requirements for all degree programs and make appropriate referrals to baccalaureate program advisors.
Required Qualifications
Educational Requirements
Completion of a baccalaureate degree in a course of study related to the occupational field.
Required Experience
At least one (1) year related work/apprenticeship/internship experiences.
Experience and knowledge of Microsoft Office and Banner system preferred
Preferred Qualifications
Preferred Educational Qualifications
Master's Degree in a course of study related to the occupational field.
Preferred Experience
2 years experience in academic and career advising.
Proposed Salary
Commensurate with experience.

ABILITIES
Ability to understand college catalog and help students make appropriate choices of courses for degree completion or transfer
Understanding of grade point average calculations and ability to guide students toward increasing GPA
Reliable with good time management skills and ability to identify and complete needed tasks
Ability to travel between assigned campuses and to work after-hour events as needed
KNOWLEDGE
Knowledge of BANNER advising/registration system
Knowledge of Board of Regents policies
Knowledge of University System of Georgia policies
Knowledge of rules and regulations related to remedial courses
Knowledge of student support services
Knowledge of general financial aid rules
Knowledge of general transfer policies
Knowledge of degree audit programs
SKILLS
Skill in the provision of advising to potential and current students
Skill in the analysis of problems and the development and implementation of solutions
High-level skill in oral and written communication
Excellent customer service skills
