About Us

South Georgia State College is a residential state college of the University System of Georgia (USG). SGSC focuses on a core of strong teaching and personalized academic advising. It has a long and distinguished tradition of serving the people of Georgia.

Students pursue associate degrees in 20 programs of study, eight bachelor’s degree programs which are transferrable to other institutions or prepare them for careers in a variety of fields.

Douglas Campus is located at 100 West College Park Drive, Douglas, GA 31533.

Waycross Campus is located at 2001 S. Georgia Pkwy, Waycross, GA 31503.

Valdosta Entry Program is located at 1500 N. Patterson Street, Valdosta, GA 31698.

Job Summary

This role provides personalized, proactive advising to students facing academic challenges and helps to identify barriers to success. It also assists students in exploring appropriate careers and pathways, and guides them in pursuing internships and other experiential learning opportunities. The advisor engages students in honest, solution‑focused conversations, promotes the use of campus resources, and uses tools such as goal setting and success plans to help navigate college life and beyond.

The position advises students on academic probation, suspension, and VA students. It reports to the Associate Vice President for Student Success within Academic Affairs and Student Affairs and is based primarily on the Douglas campus, with travel to Waycross as needed.

Responsibilities
  • Participate in new student orientations and other advising and registration events.
  • Support student success initiatives.
  • Maintain student records and track student progress.
  • Assist students with career readiness skills.
  • Help students select appropriate pathways based on their career interests.
  • Create and plan workshops on career development topics.
  • Create resources for the campus community to aid course selection and academic recovery.
  • Assist in training faculty and staff advisors.
  • Monitor student academic progress and provide developmental programming focused on student needs.
  • Advise, monitor, and work closely with students on academic probation and those returning from academic suspension.
  • Advise students in all academic pathways.
  • Participate in assessment of advising services.
  • Understand requirements for all degree programs and refer appropriately to baccalaureate program advisors.
Required Qualifications
  • Completion of a baccalaureate degree in a field related to the occupational field.
  • At least one year of related work, apprenticeship, or internship experience.
  • Knowledge of Microsoft Office and the Banner system preferred.
Preferred Qualifications
  • Master's degree in a field related to the occupational field.
  • Two years of experience in academic and career advising.
Knowledge, Skills, & Abilities Abilities

Ability to understand the college catalog and help students make appropriate course selections for degree completion or transfer.

Understanding of GPA calculations and ability to guide students toward increasing GPA.

Reliability, good time‑management skills, and the ability to identify and complete needed tasks.

Ability to travel between assigned campuses and to work after‑hour events as needed.

Knowledge
  • Knowledge of the Banner advising/registration system.
  • Knowledge of Board of Regents policies.
  • Knowledge of University System of Georgia policies.
  • Knowledge of rules and regulations related to remedial courses.
  • Knowledge of student support services.
  • Knowledge of general financial aid rules.
  • Knowledge of general transfer policies.
  • Knowledge of degree audit programs.
