About Us

South Georgia State College is a residential state college of the University System of Georgia (USG). SGSC focuses on a core of strong teaching and personalized academic advising. It has a tradition of serving the people of Georgia. Students pursue associate degrees in 20 programs of study and eight bachelor’s degree programs which are transferable to other institutions or prepare them for careers in a variety of fields.

SGSC has provided educational opportunities in South Georgia for many years.

Job Summary

This role provides personalized, proactive advising to students facing academic challenges and helps identify barriers to success. It also helps students explore appropriate careers and pathways and guides students in pursuing internships and other experiential learning opportunities. The Academic and Career Advisor promotes the use of campus resources and uses tools such as goal setting and success plans to help navigate college life and beyond.

The Advisor serves as the academic probation/suspension and VA student advisor. Reporting to the Associate Vice President for Student Success within Academic Affairs and Student Affairs, this position is based primarily on the Douglas campus with travel to Waycross as needed.

Responsibilities
  • Student Orientation – Participate in new student orientations and other advising and registration events.
  • Student Reports – Maintain student records and report and track student progress.
  • Career Readiness Skills – Assist students in career readiness skills and help navigate selecting appropriate pathways based on career interests.
  • Workshops – Create and plan workshops on career development topics.
  • Campus Resources – Create resources for the campus community to assist with course selection and academic recovery.
  • Performs Other Duties As Assigned By Supervisor – Perform other duties as assigned by supervisor.
  • Assist with Training – Assist in training faculty and staff advisors.
  • Monitor Student Progress – Monitor student academic progress and provide developmental programming focused on student academic needs; advise and monitor students on academic probation and those returning from academic suspension.
  • Advise Students – Advise students in all academic pathways and participate in assessment of advising services.
  • Degree Programs – Understand requirements for all degree programs and refer to baccalaureate program advisors as needed.
Qualifications

Educational Requirements

  • Completion of a baccalaureate degree in a field related to the occupational area.

Required Experience

  • At least one (1) year of related work, apprenticeship, or internship experience.
  • Experience and knowledge of Microsoft Office and Banner system preferred.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Master’s Degree in a field related to the occupational area.
  • Two years of experience in academic and career advising.
Proposed Salary

Commensurate with experience.

  • Ability to understand the college catalog and help students make appropriate course choices for degree completion or transfer.
  • Understanding of GPA calculations and ability to guide students toward increasing GPA.
  • Reliability with good time management and task completion.
  • Ability to travel between assigned campuses and to work after-hour events as needed.
  • Knowledge of the Banner advising/registration system.
  • Knowledge of Board of Regents policies and USG policies.
  • Knowledge of remedial course rules and student support services.
  • Knowledge of general financial aid rules, transfer policies, and degree audit programs.
Skills
  • Advising to potential and current students.
  • Problem analysis and solution development.
  • Strong oral and written communication; excellent customer service.
Other Information
  • This is not a supervisory position.
  • This position does not have any financial responsibilities.
  • This position may travel 1% - 24% of the time.
  • Must be able to perform duties with or without reasonable accommodations.
