Position: TRUCK - DIESEL MECHANIC

Truck/Diesel Mechanic

The Truck/Diesel Mechanic position performs a variety of skilled and technical maintenance and repair work on a wide variety of vehicles and light, medium, and heavy equipment. Other duties and responsibilities may be assigned.

Essential duties and responsibilities include:

  • Performs routine maintenance on trucks, such as checking batteries and changing oil to ensure proper vehicle running.
  • Inspects various parts of trucks, including brake systems, wheel bearings, and steering mechanisms to ensure they are in the proper condition to operate effectively.
  • Uses different tools and equipment such as pressure gauges, pneumatic wrenches, welding equipment, screwdrivers, hoists, and jacks, to repair trucks.
  • Diagnoses malfunctions in defective equipment by inspecting and testing using devices such as motor analyzers, handheld computers, and chassis charts to determine how to address problems.
  • Test drives vehicles to ensure they are running properly and to find issues to determine the solution.
  • Replaces parts, valves, bearings, and gears as needed and repairs vehicle cooling and heating systems.
  • Measures vehicle emissions to ensure they are in the proper limits.
  • Ensures parts conform to factory specifications by inspecting and verifying clearances and dimensions.
  • Follows all county and industry standard safety procedures.
  • Reports all accidents/incidents immediately to supervisor.

Interdepartmental cooperation includes:

  • Responds to emergency calls as required.
  • May be required to work during adverse weather conditions if warranted.

Special requirement:
Employee must furnish own hand tools with sufficient tool inventory to complete daily tasks and work assignments.

Supervisory responsibilities and competencies:

This position is a non-supervisory position.

Minimum qualifications:

  • Education/

    Experience:

    High school diploma or general education degree (GED); and a minimum of three years of experience in the repair and maintenance of automotive types and heavy equipment; or equivalent combination of education and experience. Technical certification or degree preferred but not required.
  • Language

    Skills:

    Ability to read and interpret documents such as safety rules, operating and maintenance instructions, and procedure manuals. Ability to write routine reports and correspondence. Ability to speak effectively before groups of customers or employees of organization.
  • Mathematical

    Skills:

    Ability to add, subtract, multiply, and divide in all units of measure, using whole numbers, common fractions, and decimals. Ability to compute rate, ratio, and percent and to draw and interpret bar graphs.
  • Reasoning Ability:
    Ability to apply commonsense understanding to carry out instructions furnished in written, oral, or diagram form. Ability to deal with problems involving several concrete variables in standardized situations.
