Chief Estimator

The Chief Estimator is responsible for leading the development of budgets and cost estimates across all projects. This role oversees the full estimating lifecycle for both bids and awarded work, while establishing standardized procedures, tools, and training to ensure consistency, accuracy, and efficiency across the estimating function.

Responsibilities:

  • Review project plans and specifications and partner with internal teams to validate the full project scope.
  • Identify potential risks and evaluate their cost impact.
  • Solicit and analyze pricing from subcontractors and suppliers.
  • Prepare bid instructions, bid forms, and related solicitation documents.
  • Perform and/or lead quantity takeoffs and pricing for internal budgets.
  • Develop conceptual estimates based on limited or early-stage information.
  • Review general conditions, project schedules, scopes of work, and site logistics prepared by Operations.
  • Ensure accurate and consistent documentation and flow of project information.
  • Manage the review and scoping of specialty contractor bids.
  • Partner with Operations to assess constructability and identify potential challenges.
  • Track and communicate market trends related to labor, materials, and overall construction costs.
  • Evaluate alternative methods and approaches to determine the most cost-effective solutions.
  • Build and maintain strong relationships with clients, design teams, subcontractors, suppliers, and stakeholders in alignment with the company's core values.
  • Represent the company through active participation in industry, client, and community engagement.
  • Participate in project handoff activities, including Job Kick-off Meetings.
  • Support the development and review of work plans as needed.
  • Conduct periodic project reviews and site visits when appropriate.
  • Price and evaluate change impacts as required.
  • Perform other related duties as assigned.

Required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

  • Proficiency in estimating software and related tools.
  • Strong mathematical, analytical, and computer skills.
  • Advanced proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite (Word, Excel, Access, PowerPoint).
  • Ability to break down complex construction operations into logical sequences.
  • Strong collaboration skills with the ability to work effectively in a team environment.
  • Ability to clearly communicate and defend estimating assumptions and decisions in a fast-paced setting.
  • Strong time management skills with the ability to meet deadlines and manage competing priorities.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
  • Willingness to travel as needed.
  • Strong work ethic and sense of accountability.
  • Highly organized with strong interpersonal skills.
  • Exceptional attention to detail with the ability to identify discrepancies and risks.

Education and Experience:

  • High school diploma or GED required.
  • Bachelor's degree in Construction Management, Engineering, or related field preferred.
  • 10+ years of estimating experience in commercial construction required.

Physical Requirements:

  • Required to stand, walk, and sit.
  • Talk or hear, both in person and by telephone.
  • Use hand (s) and fingers to handle or feel objects or controls.
  • Reach with hand (s) and arm (s).
  • Regularly required to stoop, kneel, bend, crouch, and lift up to 25 pounds.
