JOB SUMMARY

This position performs work in the reading of water meters and the termination of services. Duties involve the accurate reading and recording of water consumption data of the Authority’s customers following designated routes and using a hand-held computer or the AMR Drive-By unit and other work performed by this employee involves the locking of water meters for delinquency purposes and service terminations.

This position is also responsible for unlocking of meters to restore service and obtaining meter readings as needed. The position may also be required to perform other meter services functions as required. This employee reports to the Meter Services Supervisor.

ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS
  • Performs accurate reads of residential and commercial water meters on assigned routes within established time standards, which are reviewed on a quarterly basis.
  • Performs special readings as required.
  • Initiates, terminates, and restores water service to customers as requested by the Billing/Customer Service Division personnel.
  • Checks to see that meters are functioning properly and reports any defects.
  • Performs necessary minor repairs to meter boxes and appurtenances.
  • Checks to determine consistency of meter readings and reports unusual cases to a supervisor.
  • Locates correct addresses and water meters in order to terminate and restore service to customers.
  • Works closely with the Billing/Customer Service Division personnel while assisting with the administration and processing of delinquent accounts.
  • Performs miscellaneous and varied meter reading services and tasks as required by the Billing/Customer Service Division.
  • Coordinates assignments closely with the Billing/Customer Service Department.
  • Performs other related duties as required/assigned.
QUALIFICATIONS

Education and Experience:

High School diploma or (GED) and one (1) year of experience as a meter reader or in a related utility field.

Qualifications:

Possession of a valid State of Georgia driver’s license and satisfactory Motor Vehicle Record (MVR).

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:

  • Knowledge of county and city streets and locations within the Authority’s delivery system.
  • Knowledge of water meters and or water lines.
  • Knowledge of basic mathematics.
  • Knowledge of computers (Windows and Microsoft Office).
  • Skill in operating small hand tools and equipment.
  • Skill in the use of a computer and relevant software, fax and other office machines, etc.
  • Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with coworkers and the general public.
  • Ability to work independently.
  • Ability to follow oral and/or written instructions.
  • Ability to communicate orally and to write legibly.
  • Ability to assess various work sites.
  • Ability to work under varying weather conditions.
  • Ability to work overtime with little or no notice.
  • Ability to deal tactfully and courteously with the public, other employees, and co-workers.
  • Ability to learn applicable Authority and departmental policies and procedures.
  • Ability to communicate orally and to write legibly.
PHYSICAL DEMANDS

The work is medium work which requires exerting up to 50 pounds of force occasionally and/or negligible amount of force frequently or constantly to lift, carry, push, pull or otherwise move objects, including the human body. Additionally, the following physical abilities are required:
