Position: Paralegal I

Summary Statement

DOL Division of Paid Leave seeks a Paralegal I Clerk for the Family and Medical Insurance Appeal Board (“Board”). This position is responsible for administrative and legal support to the Board, which hears appeals regarding paid family and medical leave claims and related matters. This position will assist in creating initial Board processes and procedures and will involve a high degree of independent judgment and discretion to manage daily office operations, Board communications, and special projects.

A paralegal certificate is not required.

Essential Functions

Essential functions are fundamental, core functions common to all positions in the class series and are not intended to be an exhaustive list of all job duties for any one position in the class.   • Establishes and maintains case files.
  • Reviews legal/court documents for completeness and accuracy.
  • Compiles and evaluates facts to complete program, legal, and/or court documents.
  • Provides administrative reports and recommendations for new/revised operating policies/procedures.
  • Reviews state and federal codes, laws, rules, regulations, policies, and procedures to ensure compliance of legal actions/processes.
Job Requirements

Applicants must have education, training and/or experience demonstrating competence in each of the following areas:

  • Six months experience in preparing and maintaining legal documents and case files.
  • Six months experience in data collection which includes collecting, compiling and maintaining data from multiple sources such as files, records, databases, customers, staff or others.
  • Six months experience in analyzing and evaluating data.
  • Knowledge of legal terminology.
  • Conditions of Hire

    All new hires are required to report to the Statewide New Employee Orientation (SNEO) on their first day of employment. Sessions are held at designated locations in Kent or New Castle County.

    Criminal background check: A satisfactory criminal background check is required as a condition of hire. The recruiting agency may require the applicant to pay for the criminal background check as part of the conditional offer of hire.
