Motor Vehicle Associate III Overview
The mission of the Division of Motor Vehicles is to provide excellence in transportation by offering courteous and efficient service to the public while protecting Delaware residents. Employees are expected to issue, renew, suspend, and revoke driver, identity, and motor vehicle credentials, access driving records, inspect vehicles, assess fines, and ensure the integrity of all DMV transactions.

Responsibilities- Process a variety of transactions such as issuing, renewing, suspending, and revoking driver, identity, and motor vehicle credentials; access driving records; inspect vehicles; assess fines and penalties; and review customer history for outstanding warrants and/or licenses issued by other jurisdictions.
- Deliver excellent customer service to internal and external customers by obtaining business, personal, and/or sensitive information to resolve all necessary transactions.
- Identify situations outside of standard operating procedures and recommend exceptions in accordance with laws, rules, regulations, policies, processes, and procedures while safeguarding customers.
- Accurately compute, handle, and account for all DMV monies collected and disbursed, including but not limited to driver license, , title, registration, insurance, driver improvement fees, Federal Unified Carrier fees, Federal Highway Vehicle Use Tax, IFTA and IRP fees; ensure all deposits are reconciled and deposited correctly.
- Interpret, apply, and explain driver, identity, and motor vehicle federal, state, and division laws, rules, regulations, policies, processes, procedures, programs, and eligibility to the public and various stakeholders.
- Review and analyze source documents such as birth certificates, passports, court documents, bills of sale, wills, and powers of attorney to ensure validity, completeness, and authenticity.
- Access multiple manual, computerized, and specialized systems to review and analyze source documents, determine customer eligibility, and complete transactions accurately and within service level agreements.
- Research, evaluate, analyze, and use judgment to resolve discrepancies, identify exceptions, and render decisions.
- Answer customer questions and complete transactions for non‑DMV services, including voter registration, organ/tissue donor registration, warrant resolutions, red light violations, and E‑Zpass transponders.
- Administer vision, written, oral, and road examinations to evaluate drivers’ knowledge and skills for safe operation of motor vehicles.
- Inspect vehicle equipment such as lights, horns, windshield wipers, turn signals, brakes, emissions, and exhaust systems for a range of vehicles; perform off‑site inspections for verification or assignment of vehicle identification numbers.
- Operate manual and computerized vehicle testing equipment.
- Prepare a variety of records and reports.
- Two years of experience in document processing, reviewing records for completeness and conformity with laws, regulations, standards, policies, and procedures.
- Two years of customer service experience, providing prompt, accurate, and courteous service and resolving complaints.
- Two years applying motor vehicle laws, rules, regulations, standards, policies, and procedures.
- Two years using an automated information system to enter, update, modify, delete, retrieve, and report data.
- One year operating equipment used in driver or vehicle services such as document scanners, authenticators, credential printers, brake machines, and vehicle emissions testing equipment.
- Knowledge of staff supervision acquired through coursework, training, or supervisory experience, including planning, assigning, reviewing, and evaluating the work of others.
- Possession of a valid driver’s license that is not suspended, revoked or cancelled, and not disqualified from driving.
