The successful candidate will be a 1099 contractor with Music Ministry International, responsible for providing music services for the Dover Air Force Base Chapel’s Sunday Catholic Masses and Protestant worship services.

Description of Services

The music director shall provide all personnel, labor, materials, and transportation to perform non‑personal service in support of the chapel for all required services.

The music director is responsible for:

  • Providing one music director and one music accompanist for each of two Catholic Masses and one Protestant worship service.
  • Coordinating and cooperating with military and civilian activities and authorities.
  • Using chapel‑supplied music materials and facilities.
  • Demonstrating understanding of the religiously pluralistic environment and denominational traditions.
  • Complying with mission requirements and standards defined by the Department of the Air Force and the Air Force Chaplain Corps.
  • Acting in strict accordance with safety, fire protection, and fund utilization guidelines.
  • Providing services in a professional, appropriate manner, including dressing suitably for events.
Purpose

To cover faith‑specific duties related to the Director of Music Ministries contract.

Work Hours
  • Director of Catholic Music: One unit equals one rehearsal (one per rehearsal from music director and one from musician) and one mass performance. Units may be combined for special events. Six units per week, 52 weeks per year, with the option for 72 additional special service units, for a maximum of 384 units annually.
  • Director of Protestant Music: One unit equals one rehearsal and one worship service performance. Units may be combined for special events. Four units per week, 52 weeks per year, with the option for 24 additional special service units, for a maximum of 232 units annually.
  • All hour‑length rehearsals are a minimum of one hour and not to exceed two or three hours depending on the service type.
  • Hours worked each week must be submitted through iRAPT/WAWF for monthly payment.
  • Qualifications and Experience Requirement
  • At least a two‑year degree in music or certification by an appropriate professional organization; a BA degree in music or related field is preferred.
  • Knowledge of Catholic Mass theology, flow, and parts is preferred.
  • Knowledge of Protestant worship service theology, flow, and parts is preferred.
  • Participation in a qualifying audition and follow‑up interview; submit a three‑minute recorded video audition demonstrating the ability to lead and perform Protestant musical worship.
  • Minimum of three years’ experience accompanying choirs, vocals, and instrumentalists; a minimum of three years’ experience playing an instrument (organ, piano, electric keyboard, guitar) as determined by audition.
  • Ability to demonstrate proficiency in reading and interpreting vocal and instrumental scores.
  • A resume with a minimum of three references; references must include a priest or pastor who can attest to the applicant’s abilities.
  • Documentation of at least two years’ experience as a Catholic Church musician at a military installation or civilian church, and at least two years’ experience as a Protestant worship service musician at a military installation or civilian church.
  • General Responsibilities
  • Submit to Criminal History Background Check and Installation Records Check (IRC) as described in DoDI 1402.05.
  • Obtain a background check for all permanent volunteers working with youth below 18 and an IRC for one‑time volunteers under line‑of‑sight supervision.
  • Coordinate with the assigned Chaplain for all Catholic Mass and Protestant worship services.
  • Attend all required services and weekly/monthly meetings with the Chaplain and Parish Advisory Council.
  • Maintain a professional rapport with the Chaplain, service members, volunteers, and the PAC; resolve conflicts at the lowest level.
  • Dress appropriately and communicate fluently in English with chapel staff, volunteers, and customers.
  • Provide the necessary reporting on past activities, upcoming events, budget concerns, and musical support to the overall ministry.
