Join a dynamic team of VISTAs working to improve literacy across Delaware! Delaware faces a significant literacy challenge: over 20% of residents have low literacy skills, and only 35% of third graders read at grade level. Libraries are uniquely positioned to be hubs of literacy support, and this VISTA role is central to that mission. You will:
• Develop and expand Learning Circles and Family Literacy Programs in public libraries.
• Support Adult Basic Education (ABE) and English as a Second Language (ESL) learners in informal, family-friendly settings.
• Recruit and train volunteers to sustain literacy programming.
• Create engaging activities and discussions around books and reading.
• Design and implement simple, effective data collection tools.
• Collaborate with library staff to tailor programs to each community's needs.
• Document your experience and share insights to support future VISTAs. This is the second year of a pilot initiative, and you'll build on the foundation laid by the previous VISTA while bringing your own creativity and passion to the role. Further help on this page can be found by clicking here.
