Terms of Employment: 10-Month Employee. Temporary status if hired after the contractual start date for teachers.
Reports To: Building Principal
Salary: In accordance with the current Teacher salary schedule
Position Overview
The Math Interventionist provides targeted, research-based mathematics support to secondary students who demonstrate significant needs in mathematical reasoning, computational fluency, problem-solving, and conceptual understanding. This position supports the district's commitment to strong Tier II and Tier III, strategic intervention through MTSS, and data-driven instructional decision-making across grades 6-8.
The Math Interventionist collaborates with administrators, instructional coaches, mathematics teachers, special educators, and families to strengthen mathematical proficiency and ensure equitable access to grade-level standards. The role aligns to district mathematics priorities, standards-based learning practices, and continuous improvement efforts.
Minimum Qualifications
Education
- Bachelor's degree in Education, Mathematics, or related field.
- Master's degree preferred.
- Valid Delaware teaching certification in Mathematics (Middle Level or Secondary).
- Experience providing mathematics instruction or intervention at the secondary level preferred.
- Demonstrated experience using mathematics assessment tools and student performance data to guide instructional decisions.
- Strong understanding of mathematical development, number sense, algebraic reasoning, and problem-based instruction for adolescent learners.
- Knowledge of evidence-based math interventions appropriate for grades 6-8.
- Ability to analyze data and translate findings into targeted instructional action.
- Strong communication and collaboration skills.
- Demonstrated ability to build strong, culturally responsive relationships with students and families.
1. Assessment and Data Analysis
- Administer and interpret diagnostic, formative, and summative mathematics assessments.
- Analyze math data (including district assessments, state assessments, and progress monitoring tools) to identify skill gaps and instructional priorities.
- Develop and document individualized or small-group intervention plans aligned to student needs and grade-level standards.
- Maintain accurate records of student growth and intervention outcomes.
- Provide structured, evidence-based math intervention in small-group and/or individualized settings.
Deliver explicit instruction in:- Number sense and computational fluency
- Mathematical reasoning and problem-solving
- Algebraic thinking
- Mathematical vocabulary and academic language
- Conceptual understanding aligned to grade-level standards
- Use multiple representations (visual models, manipulatives, technology, real-world applications) to deepen conceptual understanding.
- Differentiate instruction to meet diverse learning needs and address unfinished learning while maintaining grade-level expectations.
- Implement ongoing progress monitoring systems to measure student growth.
- Adjust instructional strategies based on data and documented student response to intervention.
- Provide regular communication to teachers, families, and administrators regarding student progress.
- Contribute to MTSS documentation and student support team processes.
- Contribute to school improvement goals related to mathematics proficiency and student growth
- Partner with classroom teachers to strengthen Tier I instruction and embed intervention strategies within core mathematics instruction.
- Support alignment of intervention practices with district mathematics initiatives and secondary instructional priorities.
- Participate in PLCs and data meetings to support instructional planning and intervention refinement.
- Consult with counselors, special educators, multilingual learner staff, and support personnel to ensure coordinated services.
- Remain current on research-based mathematics practices and effective intervention models.
- Participate in district and school-based professional learning.
- Contribute to professional learning opportunities that strengthen mathematical practices across the building.
- Contribute to building-level mathematics initiatives and promote a culture of mathematical thinking and problem-solving across the school community.
