Delaware State University (DSU) invites applications for a tenure-track Assistant Professor of Chemistry with expertise in chemical data science (data-driven chemistry), organic chemistry, physical chemistry, or a closely related field
, to begin Fall 2026
.

Delaware State University is a historically Black, 1890 land-grant institution committed to excellence in teaching, research, and service, and to the education and mentorship of a diverse student population. The Department of Chemistry supports robust undergraduate and graduate programs (MS and PhD) and is home to active research initiatives, including environmental chemistry, water quality, and advanced instrumentation.

  • Teach undergraduate and graduate chemistry courses aligned with expertise in chemical data science, organic chemistry, and/or physical chemistry
    , including lecture and laboratory courses.
  • Contribute to general chemistry and upper-division courses as needed.
  • Incorporate data-driven, computational, or instrumentation-based approaches into teaching where appropriate.
  • Use inclusive, student-centered teaching practices
    .
  • Mentor undergraduate and graduate students, including supervision of research projects, theses, and dissertations
    .
  • Participate in curriculum development, assessment, and program enhancement
  • Establish and sustain an independent, externally funded research program in chemical data science, organic chemistry, physical chemistry, or related interdisciplinary areas
    .
  • Develop research that may leverage data-enabled approaches, advanced analytical instrumentation, or computational methods
    .
  • Publish in peer-reviewed journals and present at professional conferences
    .
  • Actively involve undergraduate and graduate students in research and scholarly activities.
  • Pursue external funding from federal agencies, foundations, and industry partners
    .
  • Engage in collaborative and interdisciplinary research
    , including opportunities aligned with DSU strengths such as environmental chemistry, water quality, and emerging contaminants (e.g., PFAS).
  • Participate in departmental, college, and university service.
  • Support student recruitment, retention, outreach, and community engagement.
  • Contribute to professional service in the discipline.
  • Ph.D. in Chemistry or a closely related discipline by the time of appointment.
  • Demonstrated potential for high-quality teaching and scholarly research
    .
  • Expertise in one or more of the following:
    • Chemical data science / data-driven chemistry/chemoinformatics
    • Organic chemistry
    • Physical chemistry
  • Ability to effectively teach and mentor students from diverse backgrounds.
Preferred Qualifications
  • Postdoctoral research experience.
  • Teaching experience in organic chemistry, physical chemistry, and/or computational/data-oriented chemistry
    .
  • Evidence of a well-defined research agenda with strong potential for external funding
    .
  • Experience or interest in interdisciplinary research
    , including:
    • Machine learning or AI in chemistry
    • Computational chemistry
    • Spectroscopy and analytical chemistry
    • Materials chemistry
    • Kinetics and thermodynamics
    • Environmental or applied chemistry
  • Interest in leveraging analytical instrumentation and data-rich environments
    .
