Department Overview The Field Engineer is responsible for the implementation of complex communication system infrastructure and technical support of specialized sub-systems and product applications. This includes troubleshooting software-driven electronics, IP networks, server and network hardware, and performance verification and optimization of RF and broadband architecture including legacy analog, advanced digital P25, and data infrastructure.
Responsibilities- Team with Engineering, Project Management, and Sales personnel to effectively design, implement, optimize, test, cutover, and document advanced communication systems that meet or exceed customer expectations.
- Provide weekly reports of activities and accomplishments.
- Oversee onsite installation of network, server, and RF equipment using system design drawings, planners, and product documentation; provide as-built information for final system documentation.
- Perform onsite and remote configuration of network, server, RF, and databases using design tools and process documents; provide as-configured documentation and baseline reports.
- Troubleshoot networks, servers, databases, and RF infrastructure using system logs and monitoring tools; ensure faults are cleared.
- Execute product and system test plans, correct deficiencies, and provide accepted test results for the final documentation package.
- Verify and optimize performance of advanced digital and legacy RF infrastructure using product specifications and FCC license data; provide baseline measurements and final test results.
- Design/develop solutions to difficult technical issues encountered during system implementation, upgrades, or support issues using project drawings and current system information.
- Perform preventative maintenance with a focus on trend analysis and documenting results.
- Unique combinations of multi-site RF communications systems and computer/networking skills.
- Strong knowledge of LAN/WAN IP networks; proficient in computer network installation, configuration, and maintenance of systems including cabling, routers, switches, and firewalls.
- Experience with installation, administration, and troubleshooting of:
- Server Virtualization (VMware ESXi v.6+ and/or Microsoft Hyper-V 2012+)
- Server Operating Systems (Windows Server 2008 R2, 2012 R2 and 2019)
- Workstation Operating Systems (Windows 7 & 10)
- Switches, routers, firewalls (HP and Juniper)
- Knowledge of secure products/protocols (KMF, KVL, AES).
- Knowledge of RF systems (transmitters, receivers, filters, antenna networks).
- Experience with Project 25 products (trunked and conventional).
- Experience with Motorola equipment (base stations, consoles, Astro
25 Master Site, ASR, etc.). - Knowledge of standard telephony and dedicated data circuits; knowledge of packet-switching techniques.
- Experience with logging/recording systems.
- Familiarity with communications test equipment including:
- System analyzers (S412E LMR Master, Viavi 3920B)
- RF Power Sensor
- Ethernet test sets (e.g., Anritsu 9090A, VeeX MTX
150, T-BERD 5800) - T1 test sets
- TIMS (Transmission Impairment Measurement Set)
- Experience with Motorola subscribers (APX, APX Next) and CPS programming software.
- High computer literacy with MS Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Access, and Google G-Suite.
- Strong self-management and customer-facing skills; ability to collaborate with customers and internal teams.
- Self-motivated and able to work with minimal supervision; capable of operating under pressure to resolve customer problems quickly.
- Excellent communication skills and a professional image.
- Must have a valid driver’s license and no traffic violations.
