Introduction

From the Delaware Bay to the Atlantic Ocean, Delaware’s coastal resources contribute to its economy, environment, and quality of life. DNREC’s Delaware Coastal Management Program (DCMP) is a networked program that works to preserve, protect, develop, enhance, and resolve conflicts related to the state’s coastal resources. Delaware Coastal Management Program serves as the Department’s research, education and policy lead for coastal and ocean issues.

DCP is also the state managing partner for the National Coastal Zone Management Program and works closely with NOAA.

Summary Statement

This position will work with the coastal program team to manage science-based projects to advance the mission of the DCP. The work includes managing contracts, analyzing research and project deliverables, and reporting on work done across the program for grant metrics. The coastal management topics of interest to the program are broad and those of interest to the position could include coastal community-based needs, regulatory updates incorporating coastal and future climate planning, and developing guidance to help coastal communities build resilience.

Functions
  • Conducts field studies or inspections and evaluations for compliance with permit and regulatory requirements; observes, collects, analyzes, reviews and interprets data from standard field studies, compliance inspections, various regulatory submissions or literature and makes recommendations.
  • Performs statistical analysis of data.
  • Conducts technical reviews and makes recommendations on permit applications or other various regulatory submissions to ensure compliance with regulations.
  • Prepares permits, technical reports and/or enforcement case documents.
  • Responds to technical/regulatory inquiries from other state, local and federal agencies as well as public and private organizations or individuals.
Job Requirements

JOB REQUIREMENTS for Environmental Scientist III

  • Possession of a Bachelors degree or higher in Life, Physical, or Applied Science or related field.
  • Two years' experience in analyzing and evaluating scientific data.
  • Two years' experience in interpreting environmental laws, rules, regulations, standards, policies and procedures.
  • Two years' experience in technical report writing.
