Overview

Delaware Eye Care Center is searching for an Ophthalmic Technician for Our Team in Dover, DE. No late evenings, no major holidays or Sundays, a robust benefits package, a team oriented working environment where you are seen, heard and respected.

Our top candidate will bring at least one year of ophthalmic or optometric technician experience. However, we do have a significant training program and would be able to accept candidates with a medical office background as a medical assistant, scribe or patient services representative.

Ophthalmic Technician responsibilities – The Ophthalmic Technician will perform a range of duties including preparing the patient to see the Ophthalmologist and/or Optometrist, conducting preliminary exams, and capturing medical history. This includes preparation of examination and treatment rooms, performing basic and routine vision screening, administering eye medications, cleaning and maintaining ophthalmic instruments, and assisting physicians during minor surgical and laser procedures.

Travel to other locations may also be necessary to support clinical needs.

Responsibilities
  • Make introductions and establish rapport with patients
  • Initiate patient evaluation, document chief complaint, history of present illness, review of systems, and all pertinent ocular findings in compliance with guidelines
  • Perform pre-exam testing (visual acuity, pinhole, glare testing, confrontational visual fields, extraocular muscle assessment, pupillary evaluation, tonometry, angles, dilation) and other patient services as requested by the physician, including specialty tests (color vision, stereopsis, dry eye testing)
  • Perform lensometry and specialized tests (visual fields, keratometry, A/B scans, OCT, optical biometry)
  • Perform additional testing as requested by doctor
  • Perform retinoscopy and refractometry; assist with minor surgical procedures or laser treatments in the office
  • Assist with fitting contact lenses and educate patients on care and insertion
  • Complete prescription refills as authorized by physician with documentation in patient chart
  • Educate patients on administration of medications and pre/post-operative instructions
  • Check temperature of medical refrigerator daily
  • Maintain inventory of medications and supplies
  • Assist with maintenance of clinical examination equipment
  • Clean surgical instruments for sterile processing; inspect instruments for damage and arrange repairs or replacements as needed
  • Open and close exam lanes, ensure equipment is cleaned per procedures, manage battery-powered instruments, and ensure slit lamps/projectors are safely powered down
  • Follow all safety procedures
  • Build and maintain positive relationships with doctors and clinical colleagues
  • Perform duties professionally and courteously; handle confidential information appropriately
  • Perform other tasks as assigned
Qualifications
  • High School diploma or equivalent required
  • Excellent interpersonal and communication skills with patients, staff, managers, and doctors
  • Basic computer literacy
  • Energetic with a positive attitude
  • Willingness to travel to other offices occasionally
  • Ability to walk and stand for eight hours
  • Ability to type or write legibly in dim lighting
  • Certified Ophthalmic Assistant (COA) preferred
  • Certified Ophthalmic Scribe (OSC) preferred
  • Certified Ophthalmic Technician (COT) preferred
  • One to two years of experience in a multi-specialty clinic preferred
