General Summary

The ED Technician I position involves the delivery of clinical nursing assistant services to patients. The ED Tech I functions under the supervision of a licensed registered nurse or therapist; they provide care, which does not require the judgment and skills of a licensed professional. After competency verification, the ED Technician I may deliver patient care services to the neonate, infant, pediatric, adolescent, adult, and geriatric populations.

The care may include, among others, obtaining and recording in the EHR blood pressure, pulse, temperature, and pulse oximetry; drawing blood, EKG, transporting patients; obtaining urine and stool specimens; performing point of care testing; assisting with ED procedures; measuring and assisting in applying slings, cervical collars, splints and crutches; bathing, dressing, grooming, toileting, ambulating, transferring, feeding, observing, and reporting the general well-being of the person(s) to whom they are providing care.

Department team members are authorized to have limited access to secured medication rooms to perform duties and responsibilities as defined in this job description.

Responsibilities
  • Follow the ED Tech I plan of care established by the Registered Nurse within a specified timeframe; including, but not limited to, drawing blood, EKG, transporting patients, obtaining urine and stool specimens, performing point of care testing, assisting with ED procedures, measuring and assisting in applying sling, cervical collar, splints and crutches, mouth care, bathing, AM and PM care, assistance with ambulation, transfers to chair and/or bed, taking and documenting vital signs, and recording accurate intake and output.
  • Documents all patient care delivered according to established policies and procedures.
  • Perform patient care based on established guidelines to diagnostic and therapeutic exams; i.e., NPO for labs or x-rays, OR, diet changes related to tests.
  • Assist other members of nursing team and/or ancillary departments as requested.
  • Perform duties with the knowledge and skills necessary to provide care appropriate to the age of patients served on the assigned units (i.e. neonates, infants, school age children, adolescents, adults and geriatrics).
  • Communicate relevant patient information to a professional nurse within the appropriate timeframe based on level of urgency;
    Report problems immediately to a professional nurse.
  • Maintain compliance with JCAHO standards.
  • May at times include the following additional duties: monitoring patient behavior; assist in de-escalation; assist patient with daily living activities, such as bathing or dressing; provide one to one observation during monitored visitations; serve and assist with meals; keep facilities clean by performing tasks, and changing bed linens as needed; participate in any patient activity; help transport patients within the hospital;

    and assist with restraining the patient if they become physically violent.
  • All other duties as assigned within the scope and range of job responsibilities.
Required Education, Credential(s) and Experience
  • Education:

    High School Diploma or GED
  • Credential(s):
    Basic Life Support
  • Experience:

    Required:

    One year patient care experience. (Acute, Long-Term, or EMT Setting). (Documentation is defined as clinical certifications including, but not limited to: CCMA, CMAA, or CNA).
Preferred Education, Credential(s) and Experience
  • Education:

    Certificate Program Phlebotomy;
    Certificate Program EKG;
    Certificate Program Medical Assistant
  • Credential(s):
    Nationally Registered Certified Phlebotomy Technician;
    Completion of “Interpretation of basic dysrhythmias course.”
