General Summary

Works independently and in collaboration with physicians to provide complete physical examinations, diagnosis, and treatment of chronic and episodic disorders. Ensures proper illness and injury care and disease prevention, diagnosis, treatment, and recovery. The physician assistant works within a collaborative model to provide quality care and improve patient outcomes by strengthening continuity of care in all settings for patients, families, and staff in the physician practice setting.

The Physician Assistant (PA) remains responsible for the patient throughout the treatment, provides the physical examination, the diagnosis, and the health care plan, determines when the patient has recovered, and releases the patient. The PA may refer the patient to physicians for consultation or specialized health resources for treatment but retains responsibility for clinical management and any subsequent medication.

In addition to job description requirements, incumbents must also meet minimum criteria for medical staff privileges.

Responsibilities
  • Appropriately prescribes pharmaceuticals according to age, chronic medical conditions, allergies, drug interactions, and duration of therapy.
  • Perform routine and specialty physical exams and document specific age‑related preventative health screening.
  • Educates and counsels patients to promote wellness. Addresses and provides resources for health risk behaviors.
  • Interprets diagnostic tests for patient and provides appropriate referrals or consultations.
  • Performs technical and surgical procedures for patients as necessary.
  • Appropriately prescribes pharmaceuticals according to age, chronic medical conditions, allergies, drug interactions, and duration of therapy.
  • Manages workers’ compensation cases, reviewing full work‑related incident and prescribing appropriate plan of care. Documents status of modified duty and provides information to patient’s employer.
  • Upholds the professional code of ethics.
  • Keeps all licenses/certifications up to date (including ACLS and PALS, if applicable).
  • Provide agreed upon coverage to care for patients in the appropriate settings (ex. ambulatory office and/or hospital) during business hours and evening/weekends, as mutually agreed upon and per medical staff bylaws.
  • All other duties as assigned, within the scope and range of job responsibilities.
Required Education, Credential(s) and Experience
  • Education:

    Master Degree Physician Assistant – or – a Bachelor’s Degree in Physician Assistant studies is the minimum requirement for Physician assistants who were licensed prior to 2021.
  • Credential(s):
    Basic Life Support BLS Physician Assistant PA Licensure.
